I use a ground drive manure spreader which is okay, but not great, as the flails don't spin fast enough to get a good spread. I get a lot of clumping on the ground as it just sort of "falls" off the spreader in spots.

I've seen in Farm Show a modified manure spreader that replaced the widespread with a pair (or 3, depending on the width of the spreader) of tires mounted flat just behind the floor chain with a hydraulic drive to spin the tires and paddles mounted to the top of the tires. That way, the compost just dribbles off the back of the spreader, hits the spinning tire/paddle assembly and gets flung out in a nice pattern.

It's on my list of things to cobble up some day, just gotta figure out how to link the ground drive to the tire-paddles.

How much are you spreading?? I use a manure spreader behind the tractor for bigger amounts. I'm spreading it pretty thick in the picture, because a row of mellons will go over that spot. For small amounts in "certain places" in my veggies, i just use a shovel and spread it as i throw a shovel full. Robert

Good picture post Robert

Thats what a PTO driven spreader gives you over a ground driven model.
