We just picked up a New Idea Model 484 Round Baler for about $5000. It looks to be in excellent shape. It appears to be a fixed-chamber (soft-center type). Is there anything I should know about this model baler? Does it have any quirks I should know about? We have always done small square bales and never ran a round baler before. Anything special I should know about round baling?

I am not familiar with that model of round baler but I have used both fixed chamber (Claas Rollant 62) and variable chamber (John Deere 550) balers. Rule number one with any round baler is to fill the bale-chamber correctly. It is important to get the swath (windrow) right i.e. make it wide enough to fill the pick-up reel across its width, and ideally, make the windrow even across its width, without too many lumps in it. There is nothing more frustrating than having to zig-zag across a narrow windrow to get the chamber to fill evenly!
Happy baling,
Roy
