I am looking for a haybine and found a NH 489 coming up on an auction. I don't know anything about these.
Were there any common problems? Are they any good? Any thing that I should look for?
And whats a good price? Thanks for any help.

I have a 489 and have problems with the gear box! From what I've been told this is a very common problems with the 489. I'm going to fix it one more time to get through this year and I will proably take it to an auction. I would be very reluctant to buy one if I were you.

great machine. I have one, and use it a lot. If it starts to plug up on the sickle bar replace the plastic bushings on each of the 4 bars on the reel. Also check for cracks on the pivot pin on the tounge. Mine is cracked, and I haven't had a chance to fix it yet. If for some reason, you happen to plug the conditioning rolls, get a pipe wrench and a pipe and turn the round shaft that drives the bottom roll backwards to get it out. Thats all i can think of telling you after having this machine for over 8 years now. Good Luck

Carefully check out the machine end of the tongue. The pivot pin bosses tend to crack, the pin anchors break off, and the tongue interferes with the rear u-jount on the driveline. A lot of work to fix correctly. At least 75% of 489's will have this problem.

Mike, I've used a 489 before and they seem to work pretty good. On this model, the reel and sycle bar float on their own as opposed to the 488 and older models that the rollers floated along with the head. One thing to be cautious of on these is the gearbox. Hope this helps, Brandon
