I would agree with the others that modifying a planter you already have is probably best until you get serious enough that you want to plunk down some pretty heafty cash.

You may wish to get a catalog from Market Farm Implement at>Link

I've not dealt with the company, but they are pretty good sized advertisers in American Vegetable Grower magazine.

I planted several acres of pumpkins for a couple of years with a JD 1240, Had plastic plates and I filed 2 with larger notches, also only used every other row so the pumpkins were 6 ft apart, just had to circle the field so rows didn't alternate.

All we do is put the pumpkin seeds in with the fertilizer and drop the planter in and go. Does a nice job and nothing to convert.

You can buy a old 400 IHC air planter and cover the holes in the drum to the specs that you want.

A corn planter or any other planter won't hardly do the job since they are planted in "hills" at lest a tractor width apart. I say that since most folks around here disc between them until the vines spread too far out. Disc the area up good, lay out the rows, keep your rows crossways even as well for the aforementioned discing. After you have harvested all you can or want, gather up the rest of them for your cattle or the edge of the woods for deer. They love em. Don't worry that they aren't eating them until they start to "sag". That's when they start eating them. Open the hole with a hoe, drop a few seeds, cover with the hoe. Works best with at least two people. Plan to stay in it for only a few years. Competition comes in like crazy, then goes out again. leaving it open for you again.

I had this same question. Yes a corn planter can be used. either get some plates that will work or buy the blank plates and make your own. Easy as that. Thaks Chris

My friend plants a lot of pumpkins. He did just what you said, he got blank plates for his planter and filed them for his own use. He's been useing his planter for many years that way now. Robert

We plant several acres of produce including pumpkins. We have an old New Idea 1 row pull behind transplanter that works great. It will plant plants, or we can set the trench up high enough that we can use seeds to.. One (or 2)person rides the machine and the other drives the tractor. If everything goes good we can usually plant 1000 plants an hour with it. These older machines are getting harder to get but are about the best you could ask for to plant pumpkins or produce...
