I grew up using a 440 square baler (back when we put up 10-15 thousand bales a year). My brother and I hobby farm togather and are looking at a 46 wire tie, how do the two compare? Bale weight and horse power neede to run?

With all due respect to JD70Jim, my experience with John Deere balers must be about like his with IH. A John Deere of about the same vintage as the 46 International is the 14T. We bought a new one and baled with it for 5 years. Why we kept it that long is a mystery to me as I look back on it, but that machine was not at all satisfactory. In those 5 years that baler never baled a full load without missing ties on 2-3 bales. And that was with a John Deere mechanic in the field with us several times, trying to figure out what was wrong. I know we all are biased by our own experiences, but I have never bought another piece of John Deere equipment, and that was more than 40 years ago. I can certainly tell you we were envious of those farmers who had model 46 Internationals because they were very dependable, unlike the John Deere. But your experience may be different than mine. I know there are many who think John Deere is a good name, but I can only share with you what my experience was.

I have a model 46 string baler and it works pretty well. I can't comment on the wire tie model nor am I familar with the model 440. I think from what I have heard when you start getting into IH balers newer than the 46 they work OK. You really don't want an IH baler older than a 46 as they had some knotter problems. I would recommend a model 46 string baler if its in good condition.

Let me start off with by saying that I think NO IHC baler to be very good, and a really OLD one like a 46 is really likely to be questionable.

There are only TWO brands of used balers worth having---New Holland and John Deere. They are the ones worth having, because either of them will have an honest to goodness DEALER with real dealer support, somplace nearby. As to which is really better, well I have John Deere and am very satisfied. There are 5 John dealers within the same radius as there is one (1) Hew Holland Dealer (25 miles of me) so I feel my choice is justified. If I was within ten miles, and it was a later model NH I'd sure look, but I am not going to want to start a debate on Deere vs NH balers either.

The odd Ford, MF, Oliver Case, and especially IHC balers are generally unpopular models with most users. If one HAS to have one of those brands, my suggestion is get as new as possible.

In the casr of the IHCs, that means get the 440 (or 430 or 420) well before even considering anything older. Even a 440, due to it's orphan status, will be cheap, so there is no reason to feel that price has to be an issue.

If you feel you just hafta have a red, IHC square baler, check for the usual items. Make sure the knotters work, and that the thing is properly timed. Check the way it operates...hook up to a tractor at least as big as the one you'll be using and see how it sounds, trip the knotters, and chexk the pickup and feed mechanism.

Actually we had a lot of problems with the 440 when we first purchased it. After half a season my dad told the dealer he wanted is old 43 back. The knives had a bad habit of nicking the twine on the bale about .25" away from the knot, and would break about 3 out of 100 right out of the baler and then 2 or 3 more when picking up. Finally fiqured out the entire knotter was mounted out of alignment this was after numerous trips out by the dealer. The baler then soldiered on for almost a decade with very minimal problems.

The reason we are looking for one now is the JD wire tie we have won't make a bale heavier then 60# without skipping half the ties. The dealer has no idea what is wrong and keeps trying get us to buy another JD rather then fix this one. We passed on the 47 though, good shape (always shedded) but looked like it had a lot of use for the $1700.00 it brought.
