i have been looking at a few new holland model 55 hay rakes for sale. i see they are chain drive unlike the newer ones which are shaft drive. is the chain drive ok or is it alot of trouble to maintain etc. i wont be doing much hay, maybe about 15 acres or so but i plan to do more in the future. would one of these rakes work for me and how is parts availability for them, alot of parts look very simular to the newer rakes. also what is one worth in working condition? thanks

I just saw one sell at auction for about $200...maybe less. Wasn't a speck of paint on it anywhere. Auctioneer claimed it was from the estate of a recently retired farmer in the area who used it every year.

A NH S-69 baler sold for $225 at the same auction. I'm no judge of balers, but this one looked complete. If I didn't already have two balers parked around my place I'd have bid on it.

I have a 55, there is no chain? Shaft off the axle, up to the gearbox, just like the newer 56, 256 models. The only thing real different on the 55 is the straight axle.

Are you looking at a New Idea or some such?

hmm, interesting, i havent actualy looked at any of them up close yet, i was just going by what a friend told me about the 55's being chain drive, but i guess thats not true, well that sounds much more reliable then if it is shaft drive like the newer ones, what is the difference between the 55 and 56 then.

Your friend is confused. There are two chains on a NH 55 Rolabar rake. One that holds the jackstand in place and the one I keep on it to keep the neighbors from borrowing it. LOL No Paul is 100% correct in his statement. The difference between the 55 and 56 is the offset axle and I don't think it is that much better. Only thing I see is an extra universal joint to support. I would bet I have left less than a bale of hay in the field because I have the straight axle vs. the offset in a few thousand bales over 3 years. 55 is a heck of a rake and I am looking for another one. BTW the one in the Implement Pictures is mine painted from Paul's pictures.

well thanks for setting me straight, my friend must be thinking of some other rake he saw or something. i am glad to hear that they are infact shaft drive, how much do you figure one in usable condition is worth? also, what years were these rakes manufactured?

I have seen them sold for $300 - $700 in all kinds of shape. Go to the implement forum and search on dishman and you will find the picture of mine with all of the specs. The 55 was the first of the Rolabar rakes and is the grandpa of todays 256 with very few changes at all. They are a great rake that is heavy and will rake a big windrow without dragging the wheels. The term "they don't make them like that anymore" applies here when discussing materials

I have a NH #55 rake. It is shaft driven, as I think all the NH rakes are. A great implement.
I have been using one for several years behind
my IH 460 with little trouble. Outside of the usual things (pick-up tynes, shear pins, tires)
they will last forever under normal use. I think
they were built from 1954-1958. I paid $350 for
mine. If the price is fair and it's in good shape,
I wouldn't let it get away.

In my part of the world, a 55 in good shape is $350 - 800 with most around $450. A 256 can go $1200 in very good shape, and a 56 is in between, around the $600-800 range.
