Can anybody tell me anything about this baler? Age? What size bale? And is it a decent baler? Will be baling less than 500 rolls of mixed grass hay. Found one priced at $3500, and looks to be in excellent shape other than the belts and they are fair. Any advice? Decent used round balers are few and far between here and are usually expensive. Thanks.

Cletus,
I have to agree with IronPeddler about the value especially in the SouthEast Texas area. Saw a good looking 510 go for $500 at an auction a couple of weeks ago. The 410 is about a 20 year old baler. Makes 4 x ? bales and as IronPeddler said, it is a closed throat baler. I own a 510 and am planning on trading it as soon as I can afford another one. They are picky balers.

I was looking for a couple of years for a round baler 'on a budget' as well. Dealer had a 510 (I think, might have been a 410) and was asking $4000. That just seemed way to high. I checked around, and got the smae impression form 'everybody' that others are saying here. They are fussy with the closed throat, and spring loaded just doesn't make as tight a bale as hyd - so you end up with more spoiled hay over the years, and it peopbably has all skinny belts - and it's much better to have wide belts, at least on the outsides. (Now, I've never actually worked with a JD baler of any kind, so I'm up front with you...)

I stuck it out, and found a Vermeer 605F in pretty good shape for it's age, $1600 at a dealer closing auction. Much better baler that any of the closed throats, has a wide belt on each side, open throat. It's not new, and has the slow 4-bar pickup, and I had to put a bearing in it already, but I think I can put up a lot of hay cheaply, and still get my money back if I want to from it.

If you can't get that price to drop a whole bunch, you might want to just keep looking a while?

I have used one of these once, and hope never too again. They are one of the pickiest balers I have ever been around. My advice would be to find a different on. Just my opinion though.
