Plant your pumpkins with the small bean or small corn plates, whichever has the least holes in it or you'll have to do a lot of thinning. The Covington Planters are still made, and might I say MADE IN AMERICA, not by some 3rd world poverty people and imported into here like Wal-Mart does. They are made in Bainbridge, Ga by proud Americans. The John Deere planters these folks are reccommending are made in Japan, or Brazil, just ask John Deere. John Deere green is all that's left of a good piece of equipment, everything under the paint comes from across the pond.

Kip, Yes they still make covington planters and yes they make plates for pumpkin, watermelon, cantelope and etc. As far as a web site I don't know. 2 dealers in the Montgomery Alabama area carry a good line of covington, French's Tractor Parts and Whitworth Farm Sales. Personally, I don't particularly care for covington planters but they are a good inexpensive planter for the gardner. Hope this helps.

The book for my JD 494A says that plates are available(or at least were) for pumpkins.
