I have the oppurtunity to farm some ground rent free. They only problem is bad deer pressure. Last year it was in beans, and they couldn't be harvested becuase deer grazed them to nothing. If i plant oats will the deer destroy them? Thanks.

Josh: You got some not bad ideas, however you want to eliminate this as an on going problem. Invite one of your local service clubs to set up a beer fest tent for weekend. Park lots of wagons, eq. on field, the kind of item people step behind for a pee. Deer will not feed or hang around a field with a scent of human urine in soil.

It works in my garden. Neighbour less than 200 ft away lost his garden to deer and they never touched mine. He had more store bought gadgets in garden for this purpose than Carter has liver pills.

Something that might work. Plant 2 or 3 rows of rape around the perimeter of the field. Deer tend to prefer the crunchy texture. At the end of the year, plow the rape under and it will come back the following year.

Deer love Oats! I have wood on 2 sides of my farm. If i plant Oats by the woods the deer eat lots of it. If you want to plant something this spring, plant Barley. Deer will not eat Barley. In the fall you can plant winter wheat. Deer will eat the wheat in the fall and winter, but will not eat it when it get older and has grain.

Deer can be pretty frustrating, however I can't say I've ever lost that much due to grazing. Really more damage from them laying down in the crop, but then , not enough damage to break me.

Oats can outgrow grazing pressure. When a soybean is eaten off, it is dead & gone. So, you have a better chance with the oats. Depends on how 'bad' bad is.

I have had better luck planting grain sorghum on ground with bad deer pressure. We have a market for grain sorghum here for bird seed and chicken feed. You may not be able to sell it depending on where you are. Oats sometimes work, sometimes not. Depends on how hungry the deer are in the spring.

If its green the will eat it. After a winter like this in the spring what ever is green they will eat. They love beans when they are green. Where are you located I could come and take care of some of them deer for you.
