Be aware that all sections are not made to the same size specifications. Take along one from your present blade when you go to buy. Neighbor gave me a whole box of sections that I couldn't use on my JD mower. Oh, well.

Good ledger plates in gaurds will help in tough grass. The old # 5 will mow with any mower.

Well, I suppose there are many opinions, so I'll give you mine. Any blade will cut well when it is new and sharp. The real question is: Which one will still cut once the blades become a little dull. In my opinion, that would be the top serrated. The bottom serrated was popular for many years because they could be sharpened. However, they do not do well unless you really keep after the cutting edge. I just really like the top ones to keep cutting fairly well even when slightly dull. Just my opinion, Steve

Here where I live in MN, there are three options: Smooth, bottom & top.

Smooth works well in finer or shorter grass hays. Might be a little slower at times, but doesn't clog up so bad.

Top works well in taller stemmy stuff. It has the possibility of clogging up with short fibers from fine grass hays.

Bottom is a pretty good compromise. Works well if you get into all types of grass/ clover/ alfalfa. In addition, you can sharpen the blades without losing the serration right away.

Anyhow, this is local best advise - might be different in other locations.

Whichever you decide to go with, remember to change the guards also because they're probably badly worn also. Remember to bolt the new sections on rather than rivet (much easier to replace broken sections). With both new sections and guards, you'll swear you've got a new mower!
