Hello,

I have read all the posts about rotary cutters and hp, etc. I have a specific question about my tractor and a rotary cutter I would like to purchase. I have a 35 hp Branson, which weighs about 4000 pounds with a front end loader. I have very rough stuff to clear on about 8 acres. Was thinking about purchasing a Midwest heavy duty (5', 85 hp gearbox, 900 pounds). It has a slip clutch and chain guards. My question is about the weight of the cutter, and whether it is appropriate for my tractor. Thanks!

Not all tractors are rated the same for how much they will lift on the 3 point, even in the same hp class. In other words a 35hp Branson may lift more or less than a 35hp Kubota. You need to check with the maker or your manual to see how much yours is rated for, and then take into consideration that most of the weight of a rotary cutter is WAY behind the 3 point hitch! (this is one area a "utility" tractor really shines over a "compact" tractor!!) If you are maxing out your 3 point lifting heavy loads it's NOT good for the lift cyclinders. No one says you have to lift it all the way though, or even take full width cuts. You only need to keep the front off the ground a little, and take smaller bites in tough conditions. The rear can ride on the tail wheel. One more thing, That drive line slip clutch won't do you a bit of good, "IF" you don't ajust it for "YOUR" tractor! Robert

Thanks, Robert. I have 2100 lbs. lift capacity at the hitch. Thanks for the advice about the slip clutch.

I've got a John Deere 5105 (40 pto hp). Tractor also weighs about 4000 pounds and do not have a front end loader for it. I use a Rhino SE-6 (not sure about the model number but it is a 6 foot). It handles the mower fine as far as lifting it. No problems. All I mow is grass. No clearing or brush so really can't help you there. Good luck.
