I have a New hollnad 489 haybine. Last summer i noticed that the frame around where the hitch pivots was cracked bad. that is the frame with the large 1 inch plus pin goes through that holds the whole haybine to the hitch near all the gear boxes and such. Because this is a diffcult location to get to, I am not sure how to go about welding this and what is the strongets way to repair this is. Is this a common problem on the 489s, or did i just hit too many woodchuck holes? I want to get it fixed before summer comes so that i don't end up with the habine sitting on one end of the field and the tractor and hitch on the other... Thanks for your help!

What's with the hitch on these.. the hitch itself looks ok on ours but the top pin keeps comin out, it comes with a holdown strap welded on it.. we broke and lost the first one, bought a replacement and that has now broke also.. we just keep an eye on it. Can't seem to figure out what drives it up...

Seems like this is a fairly commen problem with these machines. Neighbor has one that did the exact same thing last year and he borrowed our 469 to finish up while the NH dealer fixed his and then as soon as his was fixed and back our 489 broke the hitch the same place. We went on and finished out the season with it and used the 469 more to help keep it togeather. It has now gone to the NH dealer to be fixed too. Dont know why they both decided to die in the same year.

JD, Rick said it all with just a sentence or two. As great of a reputation that the 489 has, it has been a high maintance machine, especially the earlier ones. The part that Rick is talking about is the horseshoe shaped hanger that the tongue fits into. It is a pain to put in. If you look closely, you'll see that it actually sticks up through that thick channel that the top tongue bolt/pin sticks down through. unless you are a good torch and welder man, you probably will want to let someone else fix that baby up for you. Have lots of fun!!! Steve

There used to be/ still is/ a weldment kit to help repair this problem. Your NH dealer should be able to provide it. Yours is not the first.
