I have a JD 830 (2cyl) and i was wondering how much plow i can pull. I know this depends on soil type. I live in south La. rice country where the soil is thick dark black "gumbo". I've read the 830 can pull 6 bottoms but ive seen a picture of a rice special only pulling a 3 bottom in rice country. I have one set of weights on each wheel and no water ballast. Don't plan on adding anymore weight. What do yall recommend and what size (14, 16) and what JD plow model?

4 bottoms dry and 3 if it's wet or maybe 0 when it's wet. I know the kind of soil you are talking about and sometimes a tractor alone is too much.

6 bottoms is waaaay too much for that tractor everywhere but in the wheat belt where the soil is lighter and they don't plow deep to conserve moisture. Probably a 4-16's would be the best bet by the way you describe your soil type. You will be able to pull it about anywhere you want. A five bottom would look nicer and you would probably be able to pull it, but you would struggle. Here in the part of Iowa I live in a lot of guys used to pull 5-16's with a 4020 but they weren't setting any speed records, sometimes 2nd gear if it was tough going. I have an R and 4-14's is a big load for it in our soil. Last fall it pulled 3-16's and it seemed like a good match and with three weights per wheel traction was no problem. Don't know about your tractor though. Sounds like your soil should give pretty good traction.
