I want to start looking for a plow and wheel disc for my JD-R. I have medium clay ground. How many bottom and what size bottom plow can I pull with success. How big of a wheel disc can I pull. I do wnat to give the R a workout as it has ideled around to long.

I pulled a 4-16 plow in sod in 3rd gear in North Dakota while working for an uncle in the 1950s. That was on level ground and probably 6 to 7 inches deep. Up hill it needed to be shifted down to 2nd gear. I'm not sure how that would compare to your soil type. That uncle also had a 14 ft tandem disc which the R pulled nicely in 3rd or sometimes 4th. 4th was a bit fast for a good discing job but the tractor could pull it that fast. That tractor also had lots of rear wheel weight, 3 sets of weights on each wheel plus calcium chloride solution in the tires.
