The NH 281 is a good baler but not high capacity. I have both a 280 and 282. The 280 is wire though and is now being used for parts for the 282. There are pluses and minuses to the engine driven baler. With the engine you don't need a tractor with live pto or with as much horsepower. You can make tight turns on the corners without having the pto yell at you and you can throttle down the tractor as much as you want to slow down for a large windrow. Disadvantage is you have another engine to keep running, another battery to start it with and Wisconsins tend to be notorious for sticking valves when they sit for a while. Good winterization helps along with making sure the exhaust is covered in winter. The Wisconsin tends to leak oil on the top V and if not kept clean evantually a spark will fall from the muffler and set it on fire. Not usually a large fire but I burned one up that way once. The engine baler is also heavier on the drawbar if that is a factor.

Frank, they were built from 1964 to 1966. They are a very good baler. You are aware that they have a 16"x18" bale chamber? I must confess, I would rather have a PTO model then one with a Wisconsin motor, but that may not bother you.

Dan and Steve Thanks for the feed back. It looks like a low use unit. The wire in the buckets is rusty but the boxes are not rotted. Looks like it has been out in the rain but not much. It rained here two or three days ago. I did notice the weeds in the discharge shoot are starting to sprout. Will let you know if I get it as I will need a lot of help making it work properly. Well I dident get the N-H 281 but I should have. Will regret it later. I spent my money before the baler came up. It started and ran real nice, went for $650.00. I get my march allowance, I will look again. I got a nice Howard Rotovator model J and a nice shop press. Frank
