Thought I had it figured out, now I'm not sure.
I see plows listed as 2-14 or 3-16 and like that.
I know the first number is the number of bottoms that it has. I thought the bigger number was how deep it sunk into the ground, now I'm wondering if that is width between bottoms.
Please help the Rookie.

Gary, The 14 or 16 refer to the cutting width of each bottom. This is not the actual width of the bottom, but close since the bottoms set at an angle.

Yup, you measure across the frame members, not the actual angled bottom to get the width. Most plows are designed to plow best at a depth 1/2 of their bottom width - a 3-14 should plow about 7" deep, a 2-16 should go 8" deep. That's why, in some soils, a3-14 is easier to pull than a 2-16 - moving less overall dirt.

In my muck/ clay/ sand combinations, it all pulls hard tho. :)

2-14 plow will turn over a 28 inch swath of sod 3-14 will turn 42 inches and so forth
to fit your tractor to the correct plow you need to figure how much hp you have and how many inches you can pull in your type of soil and then match the plow size as close as you can

the 14 and 16 are the molboard size 14inches or 16inches. you are correct about the first number.
