Need to purchase a Rotary mower..(Brush Hog) My question is: How do I determine which size (hp) gearbox I need for the tractor being used? My tractor is a IH 656 rated at 63 PTO hp. I'm looking at some new mowers..they either have gear boxes rated at 40 hp or 80 and 90 hp. What is the "rule of thumb" for matching a mower to the tractor?

As others have already said, get one with a larger HP rating than your tractor.
My weakling 22HP 2N has already got my 40 HP rated King Kutter gearbox starting to get noisey after just a few seasons.
Another thing to consider when buying a rotary is the width.
Definately Don't get one that is narrower than your rear tires.

The gearbox should be rated higher than the PTO hp. That is to protect the gearbox. The shear pin or slip clutch is to protect the tractor.

The rated hp of the machine should be higher than the hp output of the tractor.

Its more light ,medium and heavy duty gearboxes than matching up to your tractor hp even though it might take a little more hp as you go up because of size and mass.

Buy the most heavy duty one you can afford!

I agree! If i was you, i'd NOT buy a cutter with less than a 80hp gear box for medium use, and over 100hp for heavier use. You always hit something you "never" intended to hit! Over time this is really hard on a brush hog, and no amount of shear bolts or slip clutches (i wouldn't buy one with out a drive line slip clutch) will make up for it. A cutter with a heavier gear box will give you a lot heavier deck and skirts too, and that's important if you want it to last. Of all the rotary cutters i've looked at, i like the Woods Brush Bull the best. Their medium duty model would fit your tractor perfectly, and they come in several widths too. check one out! Robert
