Kind of wanting a round baler and there is a JD 510 at an auction this weekend. Comments both good and bad as well as price expectations would be appreciated.

Balers with narrow belts have more problems than wide belts. Also, older balers often have exposed bearings on the rollers. When they go bad they often start fires and burn up the baler. Look for balers with bearings ouside of the bale chamber, or protected from the hay.

When I was looking at balers, saw one I was interested at the dealer last year too. Found out the dealer wanted $4000, that seemed high. (It is!)

Anyhow, seems they run on spring pressure, and that does not form as good or tight a bale. Hydraulics can have problems that cost more to fix, but will do a better job making a good tight bale that doesn't spoil as easily.

Also as others said, they feed a little more difficultly than the newer balers.

But they make bales, not knocking them. Just the trade offs. Buy cheap. :)

Find a newer baler a 510 can cost more to fix than its worth. The 530 or 535 are alot better.

Like the other guy said, they work OK. But I would look for a 530 or 535 if you want a used JD round baler. They do a better job than the 510.

Doug,
I got one last summer. Pretty good baler, old but ok. Around 1980 model (I think). There are a few things I learned to look for while I was looking for one. Look closley at the bottom belt system including the bottom belts themselves. Take a good look at the roller that hangs out the bottom of the baler. It's called the "bottom belt idler roller". It has the rings on it to guide the bottom belts. They are bad about wearing right next to the roller and this isn't easily seen unless you lay down and look under the baler. It is one pricey roller to replace.
Open the left side panel. You can see what kind of shape the chains and sprockets are in from there. There is also two sprockets on the left side behind the twine box that's pretty much hidden unless you look for them.
On the right side look behind the bracket where the gate lift cylinder attaches to the baler. Some of them were bad about collecting dirt and hay behind this bracket and would rust out the sheet metal. A given with any round baler is the belts (top ones in your case). They're not cheap to replace. If it's got the wide belts on the outside that's a good thing. One other thing, make sure you get the hitch to connect it to a drawbar. I think I actually still have some pictures of it that Paul emailed me when I was looking around for one last summer. Be happy to send you a copy if I can find them.
I'm pretty sure some of the other guys will have some more ideas for you.
The 510 can be a picky baler when baling. The hay has to be dry or it'll wrap on you easy. Cost of these range according to condition. Most of them I've seen go for < $2000.
Sorry to be so long winded.
Good luck. Let us know if you get it.

Ooops, the two sprockets are on the right and the cylinder bracket is on the left.
