Stopped at TSC (just SouthWest of Houston) yesterday to see how much a new 3 point round bale spear cost. It was a King Kutter brand and it was $199. Is it just me or is that a little high. I was expecting $125-$140 maybe. It appears well built though. What do you guys think? Is this one of those "you get what you pay for things"? They also had the type that "slides" under the bale on two sides and "carries" the bale. Also King Kutter and it was $250. Not sure which type to go with.

Sounds high for a spear, and I have yet to see anything at a TSC or "Fleet" store that is really heavy duty. Our local blacksmith makes hay forks with 3 inch square tube front frame, 2x3 rectangular tube for the forks (on edge), quarter inch gussets by six inches on all corners- all tubing is quarter-inch wall thickness. I modified both of mine so they also fit the JD 148 loader. Works fine for 1500 lb bales, can clear and haul quickly with forks front and rear. Now I strap one in a skidloader bucket with one chain for use around the yard.

To some degree you get what you pay for, but that's outragious. I've got a 4 Star brand at one place and it is far and away the best spear I've ever used ($199.00) removable spikes, super hard, wears like stainless. Got a couple of cheapies at other places, spikes want to bend, spear rusts and binds. Had a home made one but with metal fatigue just didn't hold up. Spears work great on 4' wide bales, forks that go underneath work best on up to 6' wide.

If you get the kind with two forks that go under the bale, put a pallet on it, and go fencing, handy for lots of things. John in Ne.

You didn't go by the one in Alvin did you? Anyway, TSC has given me some wild prices on bale spears. Last year they told me 299 for a 3 pt spear. I went to the local Ag Dealer and bought a Nice HD one for 149.00

No Kidding--I just moved down to Needville a couple of weeks ago.

I haven't priced any spears lately, but I have noticed more of the 3pt spears with extra hydraulics to double stack rolls in that area than East Tx where I came from.

I've made several from old truck axles, 2 ton or larger. Works great.

If you're handy with a torch @ welder you can build your own. Go to a scrap yard and get some used iron, usually 1/3 cost of new. I made one with old iron had laying around, works as good as them $150-200 dollar ones, took about 2 hours to make.

I think you need the spear type if you stack bales, or set them on a trailer.

I got the slide-under type, like a pallet fork. Treats the bales much better, and picks them up from the frozen tundra here in MN without splitting the bale up. The only concern is that small bales will drop through between the forks...

There are several slightly different styles, and perhaps 2 different grades - smaller for 4x4 bales, and larger, heavy duty for 5x6 bales. Probably see a lot different prices for the different sizes.

I find my heavy duty slide-under handy once in a while for other things.
