I had picked up this running gear at a auction this summer. I am building a deck on it.
My question is about the front axle.
The front attachment points for the deck are of a floating type.
I had not seen any others that are of this type.
Is that ok for a hay rack or should I put something under the floating part to hold it so it does not float?
Just wanted to know.

Kelly,I was wondering how much you paid for this running gear,to see how prices on running gears are around where i live.I'm gonna have to replace the gear on my wagon soon ,so i gotta start pricing them.

To each his own; and if that's what you've got, use it, but..... ..if I had a choice, I'd pick a 5th-wheel over an auto-type steering every time, especially if you're pulling it behind a truck. Never seen auto-type that wouldn't wander all over the road after a few years of use.

All I can say is fifth-wheels and hillsides are not a good match. I have a couple JD 953 gears that are 50 years old that are still tighter than a . . . well I can't say that, but they still tow well.

Yea, 5th wheel does not work well for a hayrack, wants to tip too easily. I understand the point about highway speeds, but if you need to back up sharp, or turn short, or work on hills..... ugh. Hate picking the hay up the first time, why do it twice? :)

Kelly I have 6 wagons total, three hay racks and three hopper wagons. All are similair to your running gear. Most guys around here chain one corner to the running gear , usually the front. The wooden rack will flex with the terrain, the solid metal framed hoppers will move in the running gear. We don't chain them real tight, just enough to keep the box or rack from moving back or forward..never had a problem with them. Make sure if you have a hitch on your wagon that it is gear to gear and not gear to rack..hate to see the rear wagon pull the rack off of the front wagon!! Mike in Exeter Ontario

Ok that answers what I was thinking.
I will be welding or some how sticking some metal shims or blocks under each end of the Floating end.
I dont want it shifting and poaring my hay all over the place.

Floating front bolster is for a ridgid box like an all steal grain box that wont twist with the terraine a hay rack made of wood will flex and will not need floating bolster. Nice looking set of r gears.

I have 2 homemade racks, one solid & one rocking. I hate the rocking. It always leans down-hill.
