Parts are probably going to be hard to find that aren't worn as badly as what you are looking for. The 495/495A used a conveyor chain to carry the seed down to the furrow, whereas the 494 series uses 2 sets of valves to drop the seed. The 495 series were marketed as being more accurate at high speed. To cut down wear on the moving parts, JD recommended using powdered graphite at each fill.

A freind of my grandfathers always said that 495's didn't really plant corn .....they would just kind of hide it. LOL
Here in IOWA the junk dealers are usually the only ones bidding on them. Good Luck!

I just sold mine last year, had a four row, believe it was adjustable from like 28" to 42", I ran 38" rows. Use rubber straps to pull the markers as far in as possible when traveling from field to field as they will catch and break in limbs. I planted about 60 acreas a year with it, never had any problems. I also had extra plates for the different sized seed and for sweet corn. Would be still using it, but went to minimum till (chisel plow) and a JD7700 min. till planter. Have to say that the 7700 doesn't work will in rocky areas, the double disk openers tend to ride the planter out of the ground.

Let me know if you want to know anything else.

Walt,

Anything to look for like weak points? Was it a decent machine
to use? Probably too old to have a moniter? Dry fert boxes, sheet metal or
fiber glass? Looking to bid on the one posted on this web site
under auction. What would you pay for one? I think this one has
a bid of $1. Located just north of detroit. Probaby a 6 hour drive from where i live. COuld probably have it delivered for
by a friend of mine for 1-2 hundered dollars. In your mind
would that be worth while? Going to use on 30 - 40 acres of corn, 38" rows.
Was looking for an AC 333, but can't find a decent one with a
reasonable price. For their age most go for way too much money.

Thanks for all your help
jed

Good planters,Price depends on if it will do your job and how much you want to spend on travling around to hunt something else and not knowing if you will find anouther one for same or less money to have to use the next season. I feel that if you find what you want even if it is priced at twice what you think it is worth you are better off buying it than not finding anouther at any price befor you want to use it.

The sheet metal fertilizer boxes are no longer available, neither are the augers. A 494-A or 495-A with good boxes is worth about $250 here in New Jersey. Mine had bad fertilzer boxes, but was otherwise good. Paid $75 for it at auction.

If you have a wire feed welder and access to a metal brake, replacing the fertilizer box bottom is not difficult. Augers would be a major problem. Planter is over 30 years old, not worth much anymore- here, less than half what they go for in your area, but for small acreage and with a few junkyards nearby for parts, they can still get the job done.
