The other day I say a picture of a square baler with an automatic salt dispenser on it. What is the advantage of salted hay -- wouldn't this destroy the baler over a period of time?

When I was growing up, my Dad would put salt on bales that were a little wet. It seemed that it kept the hay from getting hot. We did not have a dispenser on the baler.

I had never heard of that one, dispencer on baler. Your right awfully hard on baler. Maybe it is a promotion to sell more balers.

As a kid in the 1940's I remember farmers putting in loose hay in barn mow and adding a pail of salt to each wagon load. They would just spread it by hand. Some said it helped cure the hay and prevent heating of hay. Others said it made the hay taste better and cows would eat more. May be that is where the fast food industry picked up on the formula. A neighbor of mine calls it the salt, sugar and grease diet.
