Does anyone have any experience with the large engine String Trimmer/Mowers. Local hardware store has a good deal on a troy-bilt because it's been discontinued. Just bought 27 acres with several buildings and it seems like it might be handy to have instead of trying to use a hand held string trimmer. Any feedback appreciated.

I have an Ariens 6 hp. I works pretty good. I use it up at the cabin basiclly as a lawn mower to get what I can't get with the 6' Brush hog. The one thing I don't like about it is the method for changing the oil. They say you have to tip it over and pour it out the filler hole. Maybe the Troy Built has a drain plug on it.

We have a 6.5 horsepower highwheel Sears. It works beautifully, if you don't get too close to a wire fence. Wire plays havoc with the string. It will mow down cattails by our lake as fast as my grandson can work. Tall grass is not a problem unlike my hand-held gas model which always seems to get the grass balled up and jams.
We like it, starts easy and works as advertised. I guess we trim 500-600 running feet of stuff (fenceline, flower beds, etc). The string is kind of a pain, we cut several to-length strips and keep them in our back pockets, but its a bigger pain cutting with something else.

My wife and I are on our second one. My in-laws liked it so much they borrowed the first and just never returned it so we had to buy another one and don't even consider using the little weed-eaters anymore. We got ours from Sear's for a little over $200. We buy the string in bulk and cut it to size so it isn't as expensive...otherwise, it's great...
One of the reasons it is so great is my wife is the only one that uses it...she loves it...and I don't have that on my "Honey Do" list anymore!

BW,

Is that the kind where you change the string manually? If it is I know a guy who got one for trimming around his electric fences. He says it does a good job but he hates to always have to shut it down to change the string. He always says it takes more time doing that than it does to do the mowing. {Then again he might be saying that just so he has a reason to borrow one of my 2 wheels lawn tractors with the sickle mower on it.}

My 2 bits worth,

Old Iron
