Plans for Power Trailer

Does anyone have plans for a power trailer(usually made out of a 3 or 4 ton truck, truck rearend is powered by PTO, used for logging with tractor)I have some here, but they are quite sketchy, and are only half there, I would like to build one that would haul 1 to 2 cords(I am pretty sure my TO 35 would handle it) with removeable stakes(in other words, I don't want the stakes to be part of the frame.)I have a 79 International 4 ton that has donated its body and driveline(except its rear axle) to other trucks.I'd go ahead and build it without plans, but I don't have the time to do it that way. Anyone able to help me out?

Never seen such a thing. First question that pops to mind is how to you match the trailer and tractor speeds? Assume that only one of the tractor's transmission settings would be "close" to a match. Variation might not be a problem in mud but on a hard surface? Second question is how do you run a PTO shaft when the power trailer's hitch is competing for the same space? Suspect that is where the trick is. You will also need to run the drive shaft into a fixed bearing or pillow block with a flange or spline to take the PTO shaft. Sounds to me like you position the truck chassis behind the tractor and start cutting and welding. Good luck.

Steve, the power trailer is usually only used for logging, but can be used for other good things(keeping the tractor from getting stuck in really muddy conditions etc.) Tractors without ground speed pto require the trailer to have a transmission, then you select the closest gear etc. in my case, I have ground speed, and all I have to do is get the distance the wheels on the trailer go matches that of the wheels of the tractor(if gear ratio is close, changing tire size will get it as close as possible.) Therefore, no matter what speed the tractor is going, the trailer will match it(when set up this way, if the tractor is stuck and there are chains and a load on the trailer, engaging engine pto will usually push the tractor out of the hole its in.) The hitch is a different story, it has to be made up to match the tractor(a hitch has to be made up for the tractor, or the truck frame has to be modified to put the hitch point below the frame, weakening it.) If you are still lost, I will be publishing the plans on my webpage when I get them.

Steve, they're pretty common up heah in Maine. The ones I've had a chance to look at close up use a truck transmission on the front of the trailer. The pto shaft from the tractor goes to the truck trans, and the regular driveshaft is used from the truck trans to the rearend. The idea (I assume) is that you can pick a gear on the trailer that matches the gear/engine RPM/PTO combination you're using with the tractor. Being used in the woods, they are strictly first or second gear operations.

First time I ever saw one, I was really scratching my head trying to figure out why anyone would put tire chains on a trailer!

Evan, if you get REAL desparate, I might be able to arrange some closeup pictures of one for ya.

I found another set of plans in an old forestry magizine I had, and am in the process of putting them on my webpage, at least 1/2 of them will be up tonight(if all goes well, and nothing does anything unexpected.)
