OK Time has come to buy a new round baler. I very much like the looks of the new Vermeer 5400 rebel. I am looking for feedback from those of you who own and/or operate either the 5400 or 5500. I will be baling mostly prairie and brome hay and want honest opinions on what you think. Thanks for your time. Pete

I have a 2001 vermeer 545XL, similar to rebel but the silage model. I might be off a little on the number as it's in the shed and it's 20 below out so I'm not checking. Anyway I have had no problems, excellent bales. It's probably done 1600 bales. I paid $12,000 cash last spring, it was a demo. Hopes this helps Sonny.

I started my baling business with a Massey 1560 which is nothing more than a 605F VErmeer painted red. I liked the baler ok but it was not what people wanted to see in the field baling their hay. I baled with it for 3 seasons and traded it in on a 530 John Deere. As a Deere driver I wouldn't think too much about changing back although if features and need were there I might. I am hoping to add a second baler in a year or so, probably a 535 Deere. The Vermeers are good machines, just not the prefered machine in our area. There are a few around though.

I bought the last of the 504 Super I series in 1999, before they came out with the 54/5500 series balers. As I understand the 54/5500 series is a lighter made baler, but based on the same principals as the bigger baler. For instance they use smaller bearings and such, which works good for a few hundred a year but wouldnt work for me as I do alot of custom work. I like the looks of the 54/5500 series balers alot, if I just had 50-100 acers of hay to do a year they would be my first choice in a small baler. My 504 SI will bale as fast as you want when you want, we have it on a 105hp tractor and with the pressure turned up (700psi) it will really make her get down and work, The only thing I didnt like about mine when I bought it was in order to get automatic tie I had to buy the one with a monitor, oh well I've got it now and glad I did. If you have any more questions just give me a shout on my email.
John

Seems a lot of us use 30 year old equipment here.... I've heard good things about those, but my 605F experience probably doesn't help you directly. :)

Might want to try:
