Couple questions,

Neighbor donated an old JD 8' wheel disk to my collection of old iron. Just come and get it. Went over and found that one wheel is missing and he left it where he stoped. That is with the disk still in the ground. He wants me to get it while the ground is frozen (very wet ground), so I don't tear up his yard. How the He!! do ya get one up thats frozen in. We took the AC over and proceeded to stress test the boom pole. (it failed), stress tested a few chains (they passed but the boy learned how to get the front of the tractor off the ground). Any thought on how to move this disk?

Unrelated - Does any one know the lenght of a tonge (wood) for a old NI hay rake? I have all the metal parts and just need to cut a new tonge for it

Can't believe nobody suggested this.... you need to build a pole barn around it. Insulate the pole barn then add a wood stove to heat it. Invite a few buddies over to have a few beers with you and watch it thaw! Just make sure you build a door in the barn big enough to drag the disc through. simple!

One suggestion would be to cover it with black plastic for a few sunny days. Even if it doesn't get above freezing the radiation will raise the temp as well as let the Geo Thermal work and raise the temp some too. Check it after a few days and see if it is getting loose and can be raised without as much force....

Don't know why you guys didn't think of the easy way. Wait till the ground thaws, jack it up and set it on boards, then go back when the ground freezes and pull it out without tearing up the yard. Simple.

I would try the quickest thing first which might be easiest too. Like others have said, avoid possible injury and use upward force, get a ten foot length of 2" pipe or whatever is available, use a wood block and pry up each corner by lifting under the shaft on each gang. Good luck.

Run from this thing. Let him get it out and haul it off. Labor and equipment usage is more than the value of the old disk.

Any disc that someone is giving away probably isn't worth the effort. Most old disc harrows I have seen are little more than scrap iron anyway.

I had an S-tine cultivator with straight points, none of points were in soil as far as bolt holding point. Hitched tractor, I could have lifted and pulled it out. It wouldn't have been worth five cents when out. It stayed there until spring.

get some corn cobs, put between the coulters, set a fire let cobs burn good. This will thaw the ground .pull the disc out.

I've never had to do that, but here in MN I've heard of it enough times. There are only 2 'easy' possiblities.

Jack hammer. Hope you know someone with a portable unit that owes you a favor. Rental places have them.

If you live in a climate where it thaws & freezes, wait until it thaws, jack it up with a lot of wood under, & then move it when it freezes early one morning.

If it is only lightly sitting in the dirt, you could get a jack under each shaft, put some serious up pressure on the shaft, and bang around on the frozen dirt with some pry bars. But this is serious work, & I don't think you'll get there if it is sunk in to the shaft as I am guessing.

Pulling on it at all will only give you scrap iron or seriously hurt people when the chain breaks or the tractor flips over, please give up on that idea. You need upward pressure, not pulling forward, that won't do it.

You need to to break little bits of it loose at a time, one blade at a time, pry upwards on one end of one gang. Don't pull forward or to either side. Pulling backwards a bit might help, but not if it's really sunk in. You want the pressure upwards.

Save your effort till it is at least partly thawed out. Maybe when the frost is softer you will be able to raise it with a jack.Otherwise you will just bust it all to pieces.

Errin,Can you get a hydraulic jack under a frame corner some where? Maybe jacking it up 1 corner at a tme would be easier to do than trying to pull all at once?
Then, can you get a wheel under it? and let me know if you are selling it!?
Is it a hydraulic lift or the chain lift?Would the hydraulics lift it out with a block under the missing wheel? A few days above freezing wouldn't hurt but,I think we're a ways from that.Where in OH are you.I'm from Oxford.

you could get a propane heater and wrap the disk in a tarp to hold the heat in. Let it sit for a few hours and try to yank on it GENTLY. Just don't set your tarp on fire:)
