I recently purchased the tractor quick-attach yoke and the front half of the PTO shaft (with straight yoke) for my JD 350 mower (I bought it w/o the shaft). The cross and bearing assembly that forms the u-joint appears to be a press in type- press in the 'caps' with the bearing surfaces inside, then insert retaining ring on the inside of yoke, etc. What do you guys recommend using to press these parts into the holes on the yoke? I want to do it right, as it doesn't look fun to take apart...

Thanks, Kenneth

Like the others said, use a vise rather than a hammer, and grease holds the needle bearings in place. They also "meant" to tell you that to finish the job with a vise, you need to use a socket, the size of the cup on the cross, to seat the cup below the surface of the yoke, to get the snap rings in place. After assembly, if the joint turns with too much resistance, wang the yoke alongside of the cups with the hammer, and the unit should turn freely. Loosens up any built-up tension. Give it a few shots of grease and it should be ready to install.

A large vise works well to push the bearing caps in. that way you can be more getle than with a hammer, as said below problem is making sure the needle bearings stay put while putting it together. nothing like getting it together and finding one side won't go in any further and it is still out too far and joint won't flex, At that point you know one of the needles is on the bottom of the cap and you'll have to take it back apart to get it out

I've done a few with a vice, a hammer, and a couple of bigger punches. Maybe a bigger hammer at times too. That was mostly for taking apart tho...

The biggest problem I have is keeping those needles all in place while positioning everything. That seems to be the hard part.

I use a swipe of stiff grease to hold the needles in place. Apply it with my finger before assembly.
