Last month I posted that I was thinking of starting up a little internet sales sideline handling pitmans and grass boards and maybe expanding out from there. Well, I have decided to give it a go and I am need of some input from the power mower fans sense I'm a horse drawn fan.

It was suggested that the pitmans for the older power mowers are also getting hard to come by. If this is the case I was thinking of also handling them. I have listed below what I can get from my supplier and I have listed them as he has them on his form. Please let me know what is and isn't hard to find.

These are the pitmans:

FORD: 149197 (Fits 501 series) 149198 (Fits current models)

John Deere: Z8773 (Fits Big 4 horse mower) Z9298 (Fits #5 mowers) Z9913 (Fits #8 and #9 mowers) H28286 (Fits 8W and 9W Mowers)

Allis Chalmers: 802093 (Fits 3, 5, B, and WC) 802688 (Fits older B)

Kosch Series: K120B, KC1050B, K3669

International: M22184 (Fits 16, 24, and 32) M32119 (Fits 25V, 27V, and 27VA) 451392R1 (Fits CUB mowers)M32350 (Fits 112 and 112V) M22420 (Fits later and converted #6 and all #7 horse mowers) M1583 (Fits #9 horse mowers) BE ADVISED!!!! Some of the #6 mowers used the same part number for the pitman as the #9 but the holes were drilled differently. My supplier said he will make me up some using my origional as the pattern but we are going to have to change the part number a bit so he can tell the 2 apart.

New Idea: W20HS (Fits #30) W21HS (Fits current models) W23HS (Fits 250 and 251)

New Holland: 39164 (Fits current models)

Massey Ferguson: LA5009 (Fits #6) 669434M1 (Fits #32 and current models)

Outside Grass Boards:

John Deere: JD12932 (Wood only)

New Idea: W6HSA (Wood only)

Grass Sticks:

John Deere: Z5051H (Sub for E38652)

Combine Idlers:

Gleaner: 1100271, 1116256, 1113826

Massey Ferguson: 243346M1, 836784M91, 836751M92

Combine Bearings:

John Deere: H119612 (Fits 3300 and 4400) H119613 (Fits 6600-01, 6620, 6622, and 7700) H119614 (Fits 7720, 7721, and 8820) H140677 (Fits 9400, 9500, 9600 post conversion part. Replaces H140070. Wood only)

International: 156207C91 (Fits 715 series. Wood only) 166064C91 (Fits 815 series. Wood only)

MISC: M-16, 7-88

Thanks in advance for your input.

I don't know about the rest, but the Ford 501 pitman is available from Ford. The local dealer had to order it but it was here in 2 days. Still I think you have a great idea. I'm sure the old 501 stuff won't be available much longer.

Jim,

No hurry. I'm across the pond here in Wisconsin (unless your in the UP) so I know what you mean by the weather. No snow but a bit on the chilly side.

You must have a better Fleet Farm than what we have. No pitmans to be found at the one by me.

Jim,

120 miles to a Fleet Farm!!!! Now that's dedication to the Man's Mall. Thank goodness I only have to go 18 miles to the one in Beaver Dam.

Jim,

If you are going to be coming down I-39, Hwy. 51 south I'm 20 miles to the east of Portage. I'm in a 1/2 a horse town called Cambria.

If you are going to the Dells you might want to consider taking out a loan. That place isn't cheap. It's nothing but a big tourist trap. 20,000 people there in the summer and 3,000 in the winter. Folks from Chicago think of it as their back yard.

By the way, there is a Farm & Fleet about 20 miles from the Dells over in Baraboo.

O I,
I can't give you much help on which units you ought to cover.
But you could have some of the most common ones stocked for same day shipping and the others you could probably manufacture in pretty short order and get them out the next day.
Mostly I just wanted to give you a hearty Thumbs Up on your scheme.
This is Exactly the kind of small business that the Internet is good for.
You might consider getting your self a website set up at some free site like Geocities.com
Or if your ISP is like mine they give you 5 mb of storage for free that you could use to get started. Have someone help you with the HTML if you can't do it yourself and get some of these part #s listed and priced. For now you could just have your phone number and email listed for people to contact you.
Just being a member here on these forums will get you a lot of referrals and people could post your link when someone asked a question about those wooden parts.
Another thing that you or someone ought to start building is maple bearings for old disc bearings.
If you are good at wood working you might find there's a market for them too.
Good luck to you in this endeavor.
From one old iron buff to another...

Ultradog,

I have been a web nut for quite a while now. I have one website now that deals with using hounds for hunting and I have been working on another one for the past year or so that is going to deal with horse drawn equipment. I was thinking about setting up the site to accept credit cards but everyone wants around $25 a month for a service fee, 30% of the total sale, or $1 per transaction. If I was to do that I would have to sell WAY above what I want to.

For the maple bearings, if you know of any new old stock bearings laying around my supplier said he can make them if he has a pattern to go by.

I have a few other ideas floating around in my head but I best not mention them for the time being. Call me paranoid but I'm afraid someone else might jump on it before I have a chance to. :-)

Old Iron, Keep up the good work. I think your new venture is great and will reccommend to all my friends in the antique world. If some of us don't start doing this kind of thing eventually there will be none left and no one who will even know what they were.
