I found one for free. Part of a relocation sale. It is 2 hours drive away. What can I ask over the phone to determine whether it is worth bringing home. Also, what do you recommend I use to transport it. I only have a 3000 lb grw landscape trailer with a 6' by 11' plank bed. I was able to get my rake on it loaded sideways, but I suspect the footprint on this may be a bit larger. I do not know the size or model # yet.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Get it! We have 3 of em and even hit a stump with one of em and kept going! The 990 7' weighs around 2300#'s and the 990 9' weighs around 27 or 2800#'s. They are great machines for there age, mow great but arent the quitest thing ont he market. I gave $500 for the 7' 2 years ago and 1500 apiece for both my other 990's 8 years ago. I would look at the rollers, I have never seen the IH's with 2 rubber rollers, but they were offerd with them, All mine have the steel top rubber bottom, works really well, does make a heck of a noise when a wad of hay goes through em and the rollers slam back down. I pull mine with a D-17(52hp), 135 massy(35hp), 2555(85hp, turned up) and 200 allis(105hp). The only time we have a problem on the 135 is in real thick hay. We even use the 990's to mow 100 acers of alfalfa with. Sorry for going on so long just cant say enough about these machines.
John

Jeff, I still use a 990 IH MoCo and it's a decent old machine, not as fast or smooth as todays machines but certainly more affordable. I had to cut a 2 1/2 in. white birch out of mine in order to tow it home. I would certainly go after a free machine. Round up a 4 bolt implement rim as a spare, pack the wheel bearings, rig up a saftey chain and head for home. Pretty hard to go wrong at the "nice price". You could always recover your costs from selling the PTO shafts. Good luck. Roy

I don't have a good figure for weight for an IH moco. It is possibly a 990. AS for weight, my JD 1209 weighs a bit over 3000 lbs. I suspect that this would be a "ballpark: value for the IH as well.

It should be possible to remove the tongue and by using a large loader, place the moco lengthwise (so it fits) on the trailer. By removing the tongue, you would reduce the weight by several hundred pounds. You tramsport the tongue in the truck itself---that way it doesn't contribute to the gvw on the trailer.

Another possibility---tow it home, behind the pickup truck, at a slow 30-40mph top speed.

Ask for the owners manual, whatever you do.

My own opinion would be that if this IH moco works, "Free" might be a very reasonable "price" for the thing. Are you good at fixing things?

Rollers are the the name of a the game with these machines, if they are shot it isn't worth free.

The sickle driver box is the next hardest ($$$$) to repair.

Anything else you should be able to handle for a couple $100 or less.
