does anyone know what a good price for a new holland hay rake is. a local dealer has a nh 256 rake but he wants 2500 bucks for it, its in ok shape but ceartainly not mint. i would like to find a rollabar style rake(not neccesarily a nh but that style rake)i had been hoping to spend under a 1000 bucks but i havent had much luck around my area (connecticut).its amazing how a rake seems to go for more than a baler of simular age and brand

Brand new NH 256 at a dealer, last fall $4050. Got one in the barn. Any kind of used $1000. Gently used $2000-2500.

Thats because your not looking for a baler, if you were the balers would be higher than heck I think thats what they call murphy's law. I see 256's around here go for 800 to 1500 at auctions, but then I'm not looking for one, if I was I'm sure they'd be much higher.

That's the truth!

I'd have a hard time paying more than $1500 for a 256. I see asking prices of $2000, but never saw $2500 for a used one.

Would a 56 model do as well for you? I think those are in the $500 - 1000 range here....

I have 2 New Holland 56 rakes, one I gave 500.00 for and the other I gave 1000.00 for. You are going to find that the 1500.00 price range is going to be about the norm mostly. Keep an eye on the farm listings in the paper and such and possibly put an ad up on some bulleton boards. You may get lucky and run across a good deal. Between the two(New Holland and John Deere) I would stay with New Holland, although I'm a deere driver the rake parts are pretty high compared to New Holland and I personally think that New Holland makes a better rake.

Here in the midwest, a "rollabar" or side delivery rake in decent shape will bring at least $1000 at a farm auction. You might find them cheaper, but they often go higher than that. One with only a little wear could easily bring over $2000 (new ones are at least $4500).

Hope that helps.

Had a friend that had one for sale last fall near me ( In Tennessee) He bought it new and it was used very little before he bought a new double wheel rake. I would be glad to find out details if you like and it is not too far for you to haul. I can't remember what he wanted for it but I thought it wasn't bad at the time. I just didn't need one.
