Different sickle sections can be found for mowers and combines, but some are smooth and others have serrated edges. What works best for applications of grass versus straw? You normally see serrated ledger plates all of one size serrated notch but then sickle sections have different classes A+, A- and B's but I ever knew the reason

I use serrated sections with serrated guards. The mower I use is a No. 9 Mcormick-Deering horse drawn. I mowed very thick alfalfa/grass this spring and it worked great. A lot of the Amish use "open" sections on the first two (inside). I have these on mine and it really helps keep the mower from plugging in thick stuff. I would think that these suggestions would apply to tractor mowers as well.

For cutting fine stem grass hay we used serated ledger plates and smooth sections. We changed sickles often. For cutting Alfalfa we used serrated sections. We used to keep about 5 sickles per mower.
