I need to build some more hay racks this winter. I am looking into getting some 8-ton gears. Currently I have two 6-ton gears with 8x16 racks on them. What should I build for the 8-ton gears? I thought about making an 8 x 20 rack. That would allow me 30 bales per tier. Or would that be too much.

I agree with the rest. 8 ton is more than enough. However, I would make sure the tires I used were decent. I would want more than just some old wore out car tires. I know some guys use them and get away with it, but do yourself a favor and put on 9.5Lx15 or something decent. Steve

Assuming we are talking about the same thing here ( a flat wagon with a tailgate to stack square bales (by hand) on we put 20' flats on 8 ton gears all the time, even put some on 6'es. Normally sell 10-20 per year. All my personal wagons are 20's, except a 5 ton gear with an 18'. Pretty hard to overload with hay, tobacco's a different story.

I have a 8ft X 18ft on a 8 ton running gear.I can put 130 bales on it. 8ft X 20ft is good but is a long way to walk to the end.

My 8ft X 18ft with the running gear is 1800 lbs empty. 50lbs bale x 130 = 6500 lbs. 6500lbs + 1800 = 8300 lbs

I sometimes stack my wagons that have thrower sides on them. 8T gear easily holds 250 bales stacked in an 8'x8'x18' rack.
