This is a picture of the mower shoe on a JD #5 mower. Why do I have the gap at the front edge of the sickle bar. Between the sickle bar and front wear plate.

Dave, if you remove the bar and re-install with strips of paper every couple of inches under the bar, then remove the strips one at a time, where the paper is tight is where your problem is. The perforated edges of fanfold computer paper works great for this purpose.
