I am looking to purchase a round baler for the up coming haying season.I would like to know what people thought would be suitable for my use. I would be doing 300 to 400 bales a year and would be running it on a 52 hp tractor. Would like to spend $3000 to $5000. I would be baling mainly timothy clover mix for beef cattle. Thank You

We have a Vermeer super G that dad bought new when I was a sophmore in high school. It's 23 years old now and we still bail 600-700 bales per year plus what we help with a neighbor or two if they get in a bind. We pulled it with a 45hp Case 990 for 10 years and it did just fine. We are looking at a bigger baler now because we have expanded our operation; but I wouldn't trade it of for anything. The older ones are more primitive; but they are easier to work on. If you take care of a Vermeer they will last as long as the tractor you pull it with. Our Vermeer hac out worked 2 tractors to date! I see these smaller balers ofter for less than 2 grand.

I've bailed 400-500 bales a year for the last 4 years on a M&w bailer that I paid $4,000 for. It's a Krone clone and super simple to operate. I have not had anything break in 4 years-no bearings to replace-chains break. My cousin and I used a Hesston for 2 years and worked on it almost daily. The Krone/M&W bailers are also easy on the tractor to pull.

Krone makes a darn good round baler, there a chain type baler, the core of the bale is lose, but the outer 24inchs is as tight as a rope and hard as a rock, it sheds water really good i had my doubts untill i went to a krone hay demo in my area, they had and demonstrated every type of hay equipment krone made. there a nice baler a 4x4 is around 10,000 new but u can find a good used one around half price.

Claas is a good baler. Like the plastic netting it puts on, sheds water really well. Bales tight and firm, never had any spoilage trouble.

The only round baler I've ever used is a Deutz-Allis. It's a tough machine, and
I like the chain system it uses.

John Deere, New Holland, Vermeer, Hesston all are good balers. If you look for one of their newer models, you just about can't go wrong. Round balers have been around for years and those guys have come a long way in their design since their first models.
Baling 300 to 500 bales a year is alot of hay. You sure you wouldn't rather go invest in a new baler? Hesston has a small baler (830) for less than $10k. Don't remember the dimensions of the bale but it weighs 550 pounds. Vermeer has the 4'x5' Rebel baler for less than $13k and they ask for 40 hp to pull it. Makes a 1200 pound bale. Deere and New Holland both have a 4'x4' baler but I haven't priced them. The horse power you're running would be ok with any of these balers. I know it's a lot of money but you're looking at a good many bales each year.
What ever your decision, good luck and be safe.

I'd consider a 4x6 baler. I understand your tractor is on the small side, but a bigger bale means less trips to pick up bales, less twine used, etc. You can size the bales smaller than 6 feet, spit them out at 4' if you want, bigger if you can handle it.

I got a Vermeer 605F for well under $2000 this fall, that's a 5x6 baler, works good enough in hay.

You are better off with a hydraulic, rather than spring, pressure.

The newer balers are a pleasure to use, but go for more than $6000.

You might want to shop in a 100 mile circle, they often go higher where cattle are popular, and lower in a grain only area. That's how I got mine, 100 miles west - 50 miles east of me, they were asking $3500 for the same machine...

A 650 NH will make any diameter up to 4x6 perfectly. We run 2 of them, can find them for $7000-$10,000. Really great balers. You can get your 4x4 and by turning 1 bolt go to a 4x6 (for later on, if you decide on a bigger tractor).

I run a 4x4 for storage in buildings (stack a lot neater) and a 4x6 for outside storage. Also the 4x4's (bales) in this market sell for just as many $$ as a bigger bale.
