Used implements in the Pacific Northwest?

I've been reading this board since I discovered it last spring when I bought my first tractor. I've managed to ask a few questions here and on other YT boards, and even answered a few. I've been watching the photo ads for that long and noticed how few implements there are from any place west of Nebraska. I'm guessing it's because other than the great wheatlands of the plains states, the farms east of the Rockies tend to be smaller than those out here, so smaller implements appropriate for my MF35 and small acreage are more common there. As I drive the rural roads, I see implements in gangs - five or six of almost anything - ganged together side-by-side and pulled by a crawler or BIG tractor. I asked a MF dealer (AGCO) if he ever gets used sickle mowers or hay rakes and he said he maybe averages a sickle every 20 years (maybe an exageration!) and maybe a half-dozen rakes a year.

Bottom line is, anybody out here in the Pacific Northwest (eastern Washington in particular) have any suggestions of where to look for older, smaller, esed hay equipment at a working (not collector's) price? I know Kim is from Washington, so maybe she might have a suggestions?

Thanks y'all!

Chuck, I'm in western Washington and farm implements are even harder to find, yet I have managed to find what I need. Snohomish, Skagit, and eastern King counties have more agricultural land so implements are out there. I found mine in "for sale" sections of little local papers. My experience is that eastern Washington and Oregon have more sources of implements. I agree with your statement that much of the tractor talk is among easterners, not westerners. Unfortunately, development is changing the landscape everywhere. My folks bought land in south Snohimish county for $350 an acre in the early 60's. Written proposals now offer $100,000 (one hundred thousand!) an acre. With this kind of pressure on land owners, no wonder they sell their farms. As a result, farm implements are harder to find.

Chuck, check out the Capitol Press ag.(http://www.paper.net/scripts/foxweb.exe/section_display@d:/cn/cr/or/salem/section_display?$$ALL$$) paper for starters. Don't know how far north into Wa. you are but Mels' Tractors in Redmond Or. has a good selection of implements usually. Also, you can try the Ironsearch website, but prepare to your drool rag. LOTS of stuff there, all sizes, locations and prices.

lc...yup...have checked Capitol Press, and also have watched Ironsearch off and on. I'm only about 30 miles north of the Oregon border, but well east of Redmond, which is a good 6 hour drive from here - much longer in the winter! :) But I'll remember to check there next time I go south on 97.

Thanks!

Whereabouts in Washington are you Chuck? I live in Ellensburg. Most of my equipment, no all of my equipment is old. Some I inherited. Others I have purchased from adds in local free papers. I usually check the farm equipment for sale section of the local and Yakima paper. I bought a 2 bottom plow from an auction at Heaverlos Auctions in Yakima a while back. They have several auctions a year. They have a lot of used small equipment there on their yard but by the prices they will probably have it a while. Just keep watching for stuff. If you want to send me an e mail and let me know where you live and what you are looking for I can keep a look out also.

Dan...live SE of Benton City, maybe 6 miles from Richland, couple of miles off I-82...100 miles south of you. I watch the Giant Nickel and local ads, and yes, Yakima and anyplace up the valley are the places most likely to have equipment. But whereas up your way, I'd guess most places raise cows and the hay to feed them, down the valley is mostly orchards, though right around me there's getting to be a lot of alfalfa - but they run really big equipment! I'll drop you a note with my e-mail address.

Thanks!

W.A.I.T(Western Antique Iron Trader) though leaning more toward tractors than machinery, often has implements in "misc section".You can subscribe for mail service or browse ads/website online.

Chuck, Mel's Tractors in Redmond,OR has several rakes and balers advertised in a flyer that came in this weeks Capital Press.1-800-548-7185 says to ask for Scott Jahn. I have never done business with them but its a lead anyway. The big acrerage out in this country does seem to limit the ammount of smaller implements available. And wear out what is around. The Willamette Valley of Oregon has a fair number of smaller farms and therefor smaller implements. Also some small farms over here on the wet side of the Cascades but not many.Southern Idaho was small farming country too.
Good luck on your search! If you go down to Mel's let me know what shape the buck rakes that he has are in!

Chris...Thanks! I'll check into Mel's by phone, but won't go down there unless it looks pretty promising. Long drive from here and once bad weather sets in, can be pretty treacherous. If I haven't found anything by spring, makes a nice day outing that time of year.

I have bought some of my junk out of those free newspaper ad sheets like "the Exchange". Sometimes there are ads in the Spokane newspaper. And there are occasional farm auctions. Sometimes I see items with for sale signs while I am driving around

I have thought that prices were kind of high for the smaller equipment, but they sell, so I guess that is just the local market. It is not easy to find stuff that is not completely worn out.

As far as haying equipment goes, most of the real farmers went to large round or huge rectangular balers long ago. This made and makes sense because it has become so hard and expensive to get anyone to buck the little bales we always had. I am sure there are some old small balers out there, but unless they have been carefully stored inside or used every year, I would be very worried about getting them to work reliably. You also may need an engine mounted on the baler depending on what your tractor is. There are sickle bar mowers around, but they are expensive. They often have been used to cut weeds and may be in OK shape. Hayrakes can often be seen on old farms and may be for sale.

You might want to look for a swather. I have seen several of them for sale in my area, because lots of farmers are getting out of bluegrass production. Most of the swathers I have seen around Spokane have been self propelled. If you are going to do alfalfa, it is good to get a swather with a conditioner. Your hay will dry in half the time.

Good luck. I am interested in finding a baler myself.

Hal...yes, I've been watching the Giant Nickel - advertisinbg tabloid - but have only seen one or two early on when I didn't know if I was going to follow through. Then I had a friend give me a JD 214 baler - used only on wheat straw, and stored in a barn since the last use a few years ago. Now I've got to find the mower and rake. We'll be harvesting only grass hay, and only a couple or three small acreages in the neighborhood. Not really going into the business, so whatever I get won't get hard use. Good luck on finding a baler.

Chuck- have you checked in the Capital Press (the ag weekly in the NW)? Often implements of your size appear in the classifieds. I have bought several small implements from advertisers, most lately a really nice NH 273 baler for $1000.00. A while back there was an NH 56 rake for $100.00- still kicking myself a little about missing that one. Not to mention being able to keep up on the ag news!

Good Luck, Kenneth

Ken...Yes, back last summer when I was looking around to get a feel for baler prices, somebody - maybe you - suggested that. I looked at the time, but it looked like a paper subscription advertiser rather than an online listing, so never got back to it to subscribe. Maybe I was mistaken. Will look into it again. Thanks!

The Capital Press is also on line. If you subscribe you can read the current ads on Friday (when the paper comes out) If not, I think they allow access on the following Monday for anyone. It's really easy to use and able to be searched by equipment type.
