Howdy,

I'm thinking of starting up a little sideline business over the internet selling pitmans for the horse drawn mowers and twine for the grain and corn binders. I may expand into used parts further down the road for the horse drawn equipment. Does anyone think there would be much interest in something like this? Sorry for asking but just wanted to test the water before I went in too deep.

There's a demand for a lot of older stuff out there. The problem is getting on enough search engines to get the hits to make the sales. Also, the whole horse farming thing is kind of clannish. Not that they're stuck up, just very few outlets. Look at www.famerbrownsplowshop.bigstep.com www.ruralheritage.com
www.macknair.com>Link

That>Link being said, I figure anybody making a quality item for a reasonable price will get aleast some business. Are you gonna be able to live off it? Got me.

Bret,

True, us hay burner fans are a bit clannish as you said but I could say the same thing for the old tractor collectors. Where we get excited talking about the different gear ratios between the regular gear, high gear, and trailer gear of a McCormick-Deering #7 mower and what size cutter bar is best with what gear ratio; a bunch of AC fans would argue the differences between the WC and the WD tractor. You are also correct in saying there are few outlets out there to get the word out.

I'm not really planning on making a living off it. I have a good job on a railroad and I'm not about to give that up. It's just that I was trying to think of a way of combining my hobby of horse drawn equipment with a way for other folks to get hard to find parts. I also figure this would be a good way to teach my girlfriends 12 year old son some business skills. I set up the webpage and the stock and he fills the orders for a % of the sale. He enjoys tearing down and re-building mowers with me now so I hope this will help to keep his interest in the older farm equipment and a way for him to buy his own video games. (Even though I play them now and then too.) :-)

Hey- don't think I was flaming you. I'm looking out the window at my 6 Percherons right now. Just wish I had more time to use them.

Bret,

Sorry if I came on a bit harsh. I didn't take it as a flame at all. I just have a bad habit of steam rolling to the point. I guess that's what happens after being in the Regular Army and the Army Reserves for 17 years. :-)

6 Percherons? You run them as a six horse hitch?

Former USMC 79-82, 15 years a cop, so I understand. Didn't want you to think I was being harsh. A six horse hitch? HAH! I'm lucky if I get a one horse hitch going these days. 12 hour work days shoot just about everything right down the crapper. But, the baby Troopers love it 'cuz they get every other weekends off. No time, no time.

Ill say this, you might want to consider adding pitmans to mowers made in the 40s 50s maybe even 60s for tractors cause there becoming scarce, at least here in Okla. Ive got a #27 IHC simi mount, and a New Idea Pull type that I cant find pitmans for. I either buy a stock and make it to suit, or go to a custom lumber Co and buy a good hardwood 2X4 and cut it for 2 pitmans. Kindea pain id I culd find them custom made. Also if you could find a source for plow shares at least for McD plows that would be great. I heard a guy was going to try to make them and did for a bit, but the quality wasnt good and he folded. I cant find them, and treat mine like gold. I paid 100 00 for the last one I got and was told that was the last known new one in the USA.

If you look at the amount of this horse drawn equipment showing up as conversation pieces or lawn ornaments in upper income suburbs. These guys have more disposable income than the guys trying to farm with it. My son tells me that in 3-4 years they get tired of an item so you trade them for something else. Take the old item home, add another coat of paint, and its off to a new home.

You won't be in conact with many Amish or Mennonites by way of the internet but there are a lot of hobby farmers out there who like to recreate the old ways. Check out the steam and old iron shows this next summer.

Farmer Ed,

We have a few shows here in my part of Wisconsin but most of the them only cater to the gas powered horses and not to the hay burner fans like me. Most of the time you can only find parts in the flea market area for the horse drawn stuff.

I was to a show over in Baraboo going on 2 years back and only seen around 20 horse drawn items and 15 of them were on traders row.

I guess I'm going to have to buy 50 acers and start up a horse equipment only show. :-)

My 2 bits worth,

Old Iron

If you read Small Farm Journal magazine, I think you'll see there must be a huge market for horse-drawn equipment. The mag is loaded with sources of new stuff, places to train folks how to use it and the like. All very small scale, many appear to b Amish or Mennonite. Just my guess, but I'd think that internet sales might go over pretty well, and face it there isn't a big amount of overhead required for internet sales...at least not like a "real" shop.

good luck,
Tom
