The one important thing a rotary hoe does is to break open any crust that has formed on the soil surface. The crust forms when a hard rain comes shortly after tillage work has been performed to make a good seedbed. Sometimes the crust is so hard the crop seedlings cannot push through the surface.

A rotary hoe is used for light tillage and weed control. It is either pull-type or rear-mounted. Made up of spider like wheels, (curved cast spokes), may have replaceable tips. Used when crop is very small and first weeds are just emerging. Works better in sunshine, damages fewer good plants. Wheels are spaced 6-8 inches apart, and just roll along the ground, digging in just a bit.
