I have goten the sprockets off finnaly.
Who was it that said this was a easy job?
I now need to remove the middle shaft. Do I need to remove any thing else for this shaft to come out? I cant get it to budge in or out at all. I am afraid to just hammer on the shaft to get it out. SO I better check with you 1st to see if I forgot any steps.
Here is a photo of the left side sprocket off. I am worried about this bearing.
You can also check my web site and see every thing I have done to get to this point.

Ok Kelly, do not dispair!! You are on the right track!! Take a torch and cut the right side bearing off. Pickup side. (That is a standard 1" bearing. cost less than $10.00) No need to cut the left one off. The shaft will come out fairly easy then. Then remove the 3 bolts from that little hanger where you torched the bearing off so the pickup can slide to the right. (outside) Kelly, I just thought of something else. I believe you will have to remove 1 or 2 setscrews from the tube directly under the plunger area. These setscrews thread into the tube and pickup so the spring helps to lightnen the pickup. The tube is the same one that this shaft runs through. Also, loosen the pickup lift spring if you haven't done so already, but I think I saw in your photo that you already did that. YOU ARE ALMOST DONE!!!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!! Have fun, Steve

What do you mean you are worried about the bearing? On my combine I generally just cut them out with the torch. You won't be reusing it anyhow, doesn't pay to put a 40 year old bearing back in, so just get it out. I've found them very difficult to get out at times, torch is the only way. On the other hand, once in a while a little emery cloth on the shaft & the bearing comes out by hand, maybe lightly tap inward to loosen it.

Oh I suppose I will order 2 bearings.
Crap I bet they are $40 each. (Squeeeeek goes my wallet. how much were those bearings again? do you take pennies? Says Kelly to the NH parts dealer.)
I wish I had a torch. I better put one on my wish list. I have found many uses for one so far.

Bearings are 90% standard sizes, and 90% of the time cheaper at a supply store - like NAPA, Car-Quest, etc. There are little numbers stamped into the face of most bearings, or a common one like yours they just take measurements...

Yea, some people question the quality, and no I don't want to rag on OEM dealers. But, bearings tend to fall off the same truck in my area, and if the dealer wants my business he can try to meet me on some of this. IMHO.

I'd pay about $5-7.00 each for that size bearing.

If they are $10 or less I can replace a few for that.
I have no poblem with any one making a profit.
Its the $45 for the $5 switch guys that get my goat.
I always gladly pay extra for a guys knowledge that I dont have. The welder in town has made good money from me this year. He does what I wont or can't.
Pulling a part off the shelf a 5xing the price.
If they need to do that to make a profit. There is a real problem with thier cost structure.

Thanks Paul for not ragging on OEM dealers. They are just trying to make a living.(I am not the owner) New Holland 1" bearings are purchased from Fafnir and list for $6.85 without the lock collar. NOT ALL DEALERS USE SUGGESTED LIST PRICES THOUGH!!(Smile) I doubt that NAPA has them any cheaper, but I could be wrong. Have a great day! Steve

The various markups are amazing. I got an ammeter for my Ford from a farm store, figured it was cheap. When I was at the NH dealer, turned out the OEM part (which is different than the OEM, but from NH) was actually $1.50 cheaper! Oops, I like to support the dealer when they play fair.

On the other hand, some parts are just so totally over the top....

All dealers of any color, around 'here', are overpriced on their bearings. Like you said, it depends on the area.

I bought a big 1.5" locking bearing with collar (never heard of buying that seperate?) and 2 large flanges to hold it for $13 last month, so I'm assuming a more common 1" bearing would be pretty cheap around here.

But, I depend on the dealer to stock the un-common parts, so I understand if there is a difference in prices. The 5-fold increase a person runs into once in a while is really something tho! :)

Hey Steve,
I wish I could be as understanding about parts prices. I run a custom hay baling business here in north central Texas and I for one think that parts prices on about 80-90% of the things I go after are way overpriced. I know they have to make money or they couldn't stay in business but one day if things keep up their current trend, we won't be buying parts cause we won't be able to afford to fix our machines! I run mostly deere with new holland rakes and I have one new holland haybine along with my deere 14' hydroswing. Its just ridiculous sometimes when I go after parts($53.00 for a hyd. cyl. oring kit, I could hide them in a closed hand). They are charging over $700.00 for a hyd. cyl. to pivot the hydroswing(I won't be buying one thats for sure, Northern Tool has one for under a hundred). I aplogise for getting on a soapbox and I am in no way trying to discourage anyone here it is just starting out to be one of those weeks. Kelly I hope the best for you and getting the baler up and running and I hope you enjoy it very much. I absolutly love the baling business which is why I keep on buying those high priced parts. I think you will get a kick out of it. I square baled just a couple days ago here and will round bale today.

Be sure to let us know how long that Northern cylinder lasts. And tell me if it has a feathering orfice in it to keep you from slamming the cylinder to the end of its stroke at full speed. Torquing off one of those pivot cylinder mounts from hydraulic shock won't make you feel good about the $ you saved on that cylinder. I don't mind someone pointing out ligitimate parts gouging; there's certainly enough of it around. Just compare apples to apples when you tell us how much you 'saved'.

Good advice to look out for improper specs. but anyone who shifts a 14' platform wide open from one side to the other has a screw loose. Thats too much to be moving around that fast. I have to admit I have never heard of a featherin orfice before? Parts diagram of the cylinder I looked at online didn't mention one as I recall(could have just not seen it as well). I will check parts online and see. From what I remember about it though looked like just a regular cylinder too me, of course I'm not a cylinder expert either. Thanks for giving us something too look into. That is bull#@%* though to charge over 700.00 for a cylinder.

Well I just went & re-read your post. I thought you had a NH hydroswing, not the Deere you use. My experience is with NH, the Deere's swing cylinder may or may not have feathering at the ends of the stroke. Anyway, gives you something to check out. RickB.

Thanks Rick,
I do appreciate any information and ideas on things from time to time. I looked at the parts diagram at Deeres parts online and it does show an orfice, doesn't say what kind of orfice? I'm wondering though, could a person get one of the cylinders from norther and switch the ends on it? Something to think about? Have you ever bought a cylinder for the New Holland? If so what were their prices, could be less than deeres. I'm just partial to green paint, I like red paint too though. I have a 469 Haybine and 2 model 56 rakes and I have had 488 haybine. I hope to get a self propelled cutter by next season. Thanks again, I work nights at Kmart as well as hay and I have not slept much today and I don't even remember what I posted, I hope I didn't say anything to offend, if so please accept my apologies. Thanks for the information.

Thats not bad at all, I seem to have better prices from new holland than I do deere. I think its just that green paint? I am a deere driver though so that will come iwth the territory I guess. ONe thing you might want to get is a parts catalog for the baler if you don't have one allready. They are a life saver!

From your pictures, looks like you have this beat or just about. I had a Super 69 and during time I owned it I did have pickup off. Problem is my baler was only 10-12 years old at time, and yours is close to 40 years. Put on lots of penitrating oil, even some heat. I have one of the newer propane tourches, very effective on rust, and not danger of getting too hot. Use a good piece of real hardwood like oak, birch, etc.; put against end of shaft and hammer on the wood.
