I saw a nic calledold time farmer and he said he was going to use his Model R JD in the 50s. Well I used a 34 CC Case for around 20 yrs before I also got a 37 F-30 Farmall. This year I really splurged and went modern with a 48 Cub Farmall, but I mostly use it with its belly mower. Alla my equip with the eception of the bailer 60 and sprayer ?is pre 40s. is there anybody else farming with tractors and equip this old exclusivily?

Bret, believe it or not afriend of mine still uses surge buckets and milk cans. Is he crazy or crazy like a fox? With all the Amish around here there are still a few can haulers. He's told me why spend big money to replace something that his dad paid for that still works just fine. joe...

Yup, I use Universal Bucket milkers. I don't ship milk, but it's there if I need it. I know of quite a few guys around here that still use bucket milkers, even the big guys do for fresh cows and sick ones. Someone contacted me off board- and yes I use the binder for real. I do about 5 acres of oats for myself each year, or try to anyway. Between the wind here and damp weather, you can bind and let them ripen in the stook and get a lot more per acre. My off farm job gets in the way of a lot of my projects here, but in 4 years I can devote all my time to it.

Old equipment is standard fare on our farm. I bale hay for my 83 year old dad and use our 55 massey ferguson tractor pulling a Ford 501 sickle mower. we rake with a horse rake , but use the tractor. and bale with an allis chalmers rotobaler. I get alot of work done with the godd old equipment and wouldn't have it any other way. thanks for asking.

Does anybody use steel wheel tractors to farm with? What are they used for?

My 34 CC Case and 37 F-30 Farmall origionally came out on steel wheels. They were supersieded (by farmer demand, and as an extra option) on later tractors> Both of mine came out on factory rubber . Alot of the steel rims was cut off and rubber wheel rims inserted in there place. In WW 11 tractors again went on steel due to a rubber shortage. I have even seen Ford 2N 8N on rubber long with AC C tractors. The only good thing about them is they didt go flat. The skeliton grip steel wheels was bad in soft ground or gopher infested ground as my dad has told me. If they slipped, ytou dropped like a rock

Nursery next to me uses an F12 Farmall on steel with cultivators and side dressers in the young shrubs. Why? Because it's paid for many many times over and doesn't cost a lot to keep running, so they tell me.

Steel wheels are used a lot by Amish and Old Order Mennonites around here. I don't quite follow the philosophy; they have rubber tires on their buggies and bicycles, but put steel wheels on the tractors and skid loaders. One even plows his fields with a tracked bulldozer but uses a steel wheeled (and fairly new) John Deere tractor to lay the black plastic mulch for strawberries.

I have a 44 Farmall H with a JD #5 mower, an old rust covered side delivery rake (David Brown I think), a New Idea hay crimper, NH Model 66 baler, and an 8 ft Dunam disk. I will put that old hay rake up against any new rake!!!

Looks just about like my set up.
Farmall H, JD #5 mower, New Holland 68, MN side hay rake. Not sure of the brand Hay rack I have.
I am not sure I could be called a farmer yet though.

On our hay farming operation we use a 1956 400 Farmall, a 1955 300 Farmall, a 1955 200 Farmall and a 1954 SMTA. Our swather is a mid 60's NH, 60's NH hay rake, early 70's baler and early 70's bale wagon. Everything works real well, course we do plenty of maintenance on the winter.

I use a '48N and a '48 Cub Farmall for almost everything. I cut hay with a Ford 501 sickle bar and rake with a Ferguson side delivery. I go modern when it comes to baling. JD with a 315 New Holland baler. I guess the baler is now old enough to vote!

When I started farming on my own (right at the end of the early 80's bust) I used old stuff. Saw a lot of people I admired and respected go broke trying to pay for a lot of high $ rolling stock. Most of what I had was "painted" rust, could just barely tell the brand. I still use older tractors (oldest now are a 1976 Ford 7600 and 1410 Case) newest until a couple of weeks ago was an 84 7710 Ford (bought a '92 7610 Ford). Have managed to get a pretty new line-up of equipment (all 90's or later except a 336 JD square baler and a 1034 NH stackliner). Decided it was better to focus on what I do well (hay; 10,000 squares and 1000 rolls plus 100 each momma cows and mares) and sold all my other equipment.

I still use old tractors and equipment to farm my place. I have small acerage and the tractors and equip were mostly inherited or ppurchased really cheap. I have my dad's 1938 G that he bought new, a 1950 MT, 54 IH SMTA, and a new 1959 JD 430 with loader.Kinda envy the guys with cabs with heat and air at times, but my stuff gets the job done just a little slower. All the tractors run good including the G.

Even tractors built in the 60's are 40+ years old now. And alot of them are in the fields. I see tractors built in the 50's and 40's doing alot of auger work, general duty. In my area it would be rare to see a tractor from the 30's involved in serious field work outside of having fun. Most are in parade duty.

There is a unstyled John Deere (can't remember the model but has chain operated front steering) that makes the tractor show circuit. The orginal family makes a point of plowing a number of acres each and every year to work on the "Continously Used in Active Farming" braging rights category. Dick
