I obtained a weathered,(left in the field wet with a bale in it type), NH 68 Wisconson engine (running) driven baler thats a two wire set up. I plan on repairing or replacingthe broken hay tines and overhauling it and using it for hobby farm use. I picked up the operators manual for the baler and there is nothing in it about wire baling. Was the wire baling set up as a add on option or what? The wire hangs off the back of the hay feed chamber and is loaded into the tyers presently. The serial plate just says 68 on it. Where would I find info on the wire tieing stuff this baler has? Thanks for any advice.

In our area of the country, Washington State, most people used wire for many years. Now most everyone has gone over to plastic twine to where wire is hard to find, and lots of the wire is of poor quality. As the other reply said NH has a special 3 or 4 page booklet about threading and trouble shooting wire balers. I bought a 280 wire pto baler several years ago. In similar condition to yours except no hay in it. I ran it for several years on a small acerage farm then upgraded to a 282 twine. There is nothing wrong with the wire balers if you can find wire and you don't mind the pile of wire left over at the end of feeding season. For years most things on the local ranches here were held together with baling wire. You might want to check with NH to see if the wire tie suppliment is still available. Adjustemnt of twisters is different from knotters and they each have their own trouble shooting problems.

They sold you the book for the twine baler that covers the works of both wire and twine except the wire needles and threading info.

NH has a separate manual for the wire but I never got the book for the wire tie cause all the other adjustments besides the needles are the same.

You could get the 68 either wire or twine. I like the wire cause it makes heavier tighter bales, but I don't use it cause the wire cost so much more than twine it makes it too costly for the little bit of difference in bales.
