There is a New Holland 469 Haybine for sale. Can anyone tell me anything about these? Were they any good? Are they dependable? What is it worth?

Thanks.

I don't know about your new modern NH Haybines. I farmed with the first model of New Holland Haybine ever made, a 9 foot model 460. It just ran and ran and ran. My last count is it probably did 12,000 acres of mowing. The only major repair I ever remember was the wobble gear. There were other items but only minor.

Over the years I looked at a lot of mower conditioners, and never saw one that enticed me to trade. The 460 had a 6 bat reel and in my opinion that made it a better machine than even the later New Hollands. I have been told since 6 bat reel was and still is optional.

I have a 479, the next generation model. It works well, and from what I have heard, so did the 469. A pesonal observation is that the rubber rollers on the 469 models that I have seen appeared to be in better shape than the newer ones (like mine!) If the rollers are not good, I would avoid the unit as I have heard that the replacement rolls are no longer available (and would be very expensive if they were).

Value-- anywhere from $200-300 on up, depending on condition, location, how badly you need it....

I believe the 469 479 488 all use the same rollers. It's the 467 that you can't get new rollers for. But you're right, the rollers aren't cheap.

The 469 was probably New Holland's best haybine they ever built. Granted, the newer 489,492 and now 1465 would seem to be better with their independant floating cutterbar, but they have been by far much more expensive to upkeep. The 469 rolls have almost been bullet proof and mechanicly they just keep running. The newer 479 and 488 rolls were not nearly as good. If you find one at a reasonable price, I would not be afraid of it even though they are over 30 years old. Steve
