Don't feel bad about breaking that sprocket, you ain't the only one that has done it(me,myself&I) That other bracket that you are talking about is what supports the other side of the pickup, after you get the shaft out take out the 2 bolts and the set screw and it will come off of the pickup frame. As far as your wood bearings,I have a new set in the shop and if I don't forget I will measure them tomorrow for the thickness and let you know, the length you should have and don't forget that they are beveled on each end. Hope this helps

Kelly , some may disagree but your propane torch might give you enough heat to loosen that cog. Have a pail of cold water ready and hold the propane torch on it for a long time, when you think it is hot douse it with cold water. The sudden change in temperature will cause an expansion\contraction between the two surfaces, breaking the rust and then the puller may do the job. I would use a penetrant on it after heating. Also when you have tension on the puller give it a whack with the hammer, sometimes a sudden jolt like that will cause it to move. Good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

That looks like a thin gear at the outer edge compared the thick hub. Some type of backing probably would have supported the gear, but that hub has been on that shaft a long time so probably needs to be heated before/during pulling. What does that gear drive? If it's a light load, you may be able to braze the broken piece back in place and re-use the gear.

It is the pick up drive on the baler. I need to remove the old one and put on another from my parts baler. This one had been welded (not by me) and is out of alighnment. So I need to do this twice.
Would one of those hand held propane torches be hot enough?
I do not have a gas welder.

You're just like me. Teach yourself expensive lessons, nothing like experience as a teacher.

I tell ya. I have not had any luck with pullers this year. I broke a rented one on the steering wheel on my H. I had to pay for that one.
Now this.
Crap this cant be that hard. Hook the damn puller on, then pull the dang gear, pully, wheel, what ever.
Sheesh.

The fan went out on my combine this fall. Seperator fan. Got it pulled out of the combine pretty quick, but I needed a pulley off one end, plus the tin pannel between the fan & the pulley.

Well, I worked it over, got frustrated, & need to make a 2 hour parts run, so took it to a shop. the guy said he'll have it done by the time I came back.

When I got back, the torch was still running, I could hear cussing as I opened the door. He looked up, & said he had never seen anything like this, ever, he had to cut the shaft off on both sides, blow it out the pulley, plus blow both locking screws out their holes.

The half moon had worn into the pulley, and it was not going to let go.

I'm _sure_ glad I was getting a new shaft with the whole fan assembly! :)

Sometimes thes things just don't let go. I have a parts combine (different fan, same pully) but couldn't get that pulley off either!

Kelly, you did nothing wrong. More than likely that sprocket was never off in the 45 year history of the baler. Heat probably would have helped, but no guarentee. Your on the right track. Either cut the rest off or heat and pull again. As far as your wood slides, (this is from memory only) they were approximately 18 to 20" long and about 2" thick and 2" high. This is very rough estimate, but shouldn't be too far off. Steve

Kelly,
I believe Steve had the right answer - heat might have helped, maybe not. I'd sure find a way to cut that sucker off - it's already broke. Those little cut off wheels in a 4 1/2 grinder are handy for things like this and won't put any stress on the (good) shaft the sprocket drives. A saw-all with bimetal blades is handy sometimes as well. PB Blaster or Kroil with a little time and some heat from your propane torch might make the other side easier. Not sure what that other sprocket costs but you might even consider cutting it off if it gets contrary rather than break a puller, damage the shaft or spend a whole day on it - just a thought. I'm not one to throw much away but don't mind sacrificing a part if the time involved trying to save it or the potential danger to other more expensive stuff around it warrant just getting the new part. Good luck!
