What type of breakaway hitch should my JD No. 55 have on it?

It is a 3-14" and just has a pin hitch. No type of breakaway. I've never hit any rocks, yet! thanks

BTW, all the hydraulic lines are breakaway type.

Edwards, The plow you have is a #55H, I can tell because you mention hydraulic lines. John deere labeled 55A, 55B, and 55H all as "55A-B-H" because they are so similar. To answer your question, most Hydraulic lifted #55 plows used a hitch as you described and used a clutch throw-out mechanism that popped the clutch lever back when the plow hit something hard, this stopped the tractor before damage was done. Most guys who have used these learn to sit sideways after they can walk again, that clutch lever can do a job on your knee. Get a parts book for the plow, and you will see the different hitches available for the different models. Get a used manual( lots of them around) or get a reprint from John Deere. Good luck.

thanks for the info. I have read about those mechanisms. What did they recommend when using behind a red tractor? heh heh. I the older JD used a breakaway style that I might adapt.

thanks again.

A manual is on the way!

Edwards, I forgot to mention that for use behind tractors other than hand clutch John Deeres, the release type hitches are interchangeable with the pin type. And there are enough 55s around to donate one. Bob

OK, thanks again for the reply. I figured that must be the case. I'll do a search in the classifieds or place an ad.

Thanks again.
