Chisel plow

i have a farmer friend that has a JD 4230 (100 hp) and he was using it to pull a 5 shank chisel plow. only problem he said is that it would not do a good job pulling it in 4th gear. what would be the approx ground speed for that size chisel? i would have thought that 3rd gear would be ok, but i do not do any chiseling either. he thought it might be a clutch problem so he replaced it and still to no avail. any thoughts on this?

If this is a chisel plow,and not a subsoiler.He's going to deep,sweeps are to large or tractor is very sick.Should have dauls on and rite weights 4230 should run with 5 shank chisel plow.Those 4" wide twisted shovels can pull hard,but we use a 100 hp ford 9 3"sweeps to finish up head lands and small fieid has no problem on the tuffest ground we have.Those head lands can get mighty hard from big tractors,combines and grain trucks packing them.Our ground is flat so if he has big hills maybe thats all she wants.I thought rule of thumb 10hp per shank for chisel plow.Double or triple the hp per shank for subsoilers.Ahh what do I know just a dumb farmer.

could be several things from soil type and condition to tractor tire size ,to a hardpan in soil. in the right conditions even a chisel plow can creat its own 'hardpan' .one thing is to run when chisel plowing at a different angle than normal. it might need to be subsoiled. it could be that with even a 5 shank chisel that it is too much for the tractor. there are light weight chisels designed for 50 hp tractors and heaveir ones with the same number of shanks that 100hp would struggle with.he might need to rent or hire someone with a bigger tractor to come in once and " rip it" . [what we around here call subsoiling .he might need more weight or dual rear tires to get enough traction.knowing the area and type of soil helps. maybe even have dealer put tractor on to a dynometer to check it's hp. which i beleive is a machine that hooks to the pto of the tractor to measure it's current horsepower. with age and use a tractors hp might vary from what is was when new or from what was advertised in the brochure. i have seen pics of a 32 hp ford 2000 in sandy soil pulling a 4 bottom plow where around here if you tried to plow deep you couldnt hardly pull 2 at an efficient speed!

What do you mean by not doing a good job? The chisel not doing a good job or the tractor not being able to pull it? A 5 shank chisel is sized for a 3020 (70 hp), so the 4230 should fly with it.

my friend told me the tractor seemed to be lugging hard trying to pull the chisel in 4 th gear. i don't really know what all he done to it except replace the clutch. i was just curious about this because i thought this size machine would not have any trouble pulling it.

I have a IH 56(I think) that I pulled with my 3020, it is a 7 shank if I remember right, haven't used it in years. The 3020 seemed to pull it fine although it was a pull. One thing you have to rememeber is that pulling a chisel is a different world from pulling a disk, the rolling action of a disk helps out somewhat in the pulling as a chisel or subsoiler is a dead pull. The other ideas as type of soil and hardpan and such certainly apply to the problem as well as the tire condition and if the tractor has been used, and I mean used, the motor may just be tired. As it comes from the factory with a 5 shank plow you should have 20 hp per shank if you wanted to figure it that way. ONe other thing that might be a factor would be, how deep is he trying to go on the first pass, he may have to try going half that deep first pass and change directions and cross plow adn go deeper, that would help and he could run in 4th better. Just a few thoughts, well, here it is about middle of Nov. and I'm off to bale hay that has been rained on for 2 weeks, checked it yesterday and its not hurt much.
