Also it will vary with how it is mounted on the tractor. I have a number 8w mower that has been on 3 different tractors and each took a different length pty

I mounted my #9 mower on my 400 and had to go to the JD dealer to get the right parts. You can get longer ones and cut them down to the right length if need be. Nice looking H :)

The Operator's Manual shows 9 different lenghts of Square Shafts pending the tractor used. It appears the 18 inch was the older JD's and Farmall C, 21 inch for newer letter series JD's and list of IHC converted, 22 inch used with Oliver 70, 23 1/4 inch Allis B, 25 1/2 IHC 10-20 & F12 & IHC not converted, 27 inch JD Styled D and some M-M. The 34 inch shaft was for JD R- Oliver Row Crop- Ford- Ford-Ferguson & Caterpillar D2, the 44 1/2 inch was for the JD GP- IHC F20 and lastly the 30 inch shaft for the JD M and other JD's.
I hope this summary helps or response with your tractor type and S/N. It may be in the list
