I'm looking for suggestions for preserving the wood in old wagons or implements. I have a triple box on high wheeled wooden gear that is excellent shape but want to know best way to 1. preserve and 2. bring out the old lettering better. I know many people use linseed oil. Are there other options?

Linseed oil is a good preservative. One thing about these old wood implements is that you must keep them inside or they will not last very long.

The Ontario Agricultural Museum used a 50/50 mixture of methyl-hydrate and clear shellac followed by ordinary household paste wax to bring out faded lettering on wooden equipment stored indoors. Works very well!

I certainly agree that they must be kept indoors. It really bothers me to see people using wagons, wheels, etc as yard ornaments kept in the weather. My neighbor bought a grain drill and put it in the yard, filled the box with dirt and planted flowers in it. You'll never guess what happened--it rotted away in a year or two! Also if your shed has a dirt floor, put the wheels, steel or wood, on board or something to keep them off the dampness.

I've got some horse drawn plows i restored. i sanded the handles and got them smooth and put glossy polyurethane on them, it has done very well and brought out the beauty of the wood
