Vermeer 605F vs cornstalks

Today, the cornstalks won. This is my first round baler, & I realize it's an older baler. The stalks like to pack up in the pickup corners. But I can deal with that.

The problem is the slip clutch goes. Got 1 bale blaed, & the machine stopped, could not get twine on it. Started the next bale, got 1/2 bale, & slip clutch went. Started a third, got 1/4 bale, & slip clutch went. Grrr.

Doesn't look like a very adjustable slip clutch? It appears that corn stalk stuff is accumulating behind some of the rollers, and this is packing up the machine, stopping it.

Is this a sign the slip clutch is bad, the stalks are too wet, or the belts are too smooth? Or any ideas?

The machine made 40 bales of alfalfa & grass hay just fine on third cutting. Oh, & I chop the stalks, raked 3-4 rows together. We are having a very, very wet & cold fall, finally 3 days of low sun & about 40 degrees, don't know if the stalks will get much drier here in MN.

Any suggestions would be nice, as it was along day. Flat tire on the plowing tractor, siderake fell apart, & a hole in the stalk chopper was throwing cobs at me. I've got some repairing to do tomorrow! :)

the only way I could ever bale stalks with the 605c was just after the combine, once they get rained on or draw ground moister I would have the same problem.I baled 172 with a JD 557 this year, and about every 20 bales I would clean out the stalks that would fall between the belts and gather inside the baler just to keep from causing problems. pappy

Thanks guys - not what I wanted to hear exactly, but thanks. :) I couldn't combine right after the combine this year - it was raining/misting for the last 1/2 of that field as I was combining.

I got real used to stopping every half round or so to clear slugs in the combine head, so I guess baling this year is no different. It worked much better today, no picnic, but good enough so I think I'll get my 30-50 bales, which is all I want.

Very, very tough fall, I was comibing beans at 19% moisture to beat the snow, corn in the rain. I guess it's a good test of how bad things can be!

Have had a 605F for many years; great baler, but some things are beyond its capabilities. Baling corn stalks is one of them. Baled the last of my hay yesterday..... fescue, ladino clover and (mostly) Johnson grass.

we have a massey 450 thats about the same as the 605 and they just don't do corn stalk. as for the slip clutch they are kind of a pain to tighten up but it's not that bad
