Do any of you know of a Howard Rotovator or J.D. 3 pt. tiller that a neighbor or friend has for sale? I been looking everywhere here in the mid-atlantic for one. Let me know if you can help - The classifieds don't list one, nor are any on the other sites I go to-

I know Howard is a good machine, but If I may ask, what is your attraction to a Deere tiller? I'd bet they didn't make their own.

A lot of the John Deere tillers are Howards. I don't think Howard gives Deere the "good stuff" though?? At least i've never seen a deer tiller with a multi speed gear box for instance. Personally, unless your just going to till small gardens, i wouldn't want a tiller (Rotavator) with out that feature!! Robert

I'd been told that the J.D. tiller was a Howard painted green. No other difference. I'll look into that. Do you know the hp. requirement? I was told 10 hp per foot to run the rotovator properly, does that sound right to you?

As i stated in my other post, some JD tillers "are" Howards painted green. As for HP per foot, that's a lot harder question to answer!! You haven't said what you plan to use this tiller for yet??? If you are going to till smaller gardens ect.., you can get buy on a lot less than 10 HP per foot, if you want a "field" tiller (rotavator) that's another story, as i wouldn't want a rotavator with out the selectatilth gear box option!!! This allows you to turn the tine speed up, and match the tiller, to the conditions and amount of tillage you want. With heavy damp soil and faster tine speeds, 10 HP per foot will be pretty close, expecially with the bigger HD rotavators. For instance, my HR30 has the bigger tines, and they take more HP to run than the smaller ones. Hope this helps, Robert

Sure looks like a nice set-up. We will be using the Rotovator in the field. I'll stick to the advice about the hp to be on the safe side. Also with the gear box model. Still looking for one, seems hard to find in these parts. Can't go new.
Thanks everybody!

That's news to me. I run a 50" Howard (call it 4 feet...) with a 18 horse John Deere 750 diesel, and have no problems, even when turning old sod.

If I drive it right down as deep as it'll go, it'll make the black smoke roll, but more horsepower would either slip the clutch or break the tiller.
