I am having trouble getting the knotters on my 68 baler in time. As a result, I'm shearing the small shear bolt on the drive sprocket. Any suggestions on how to get the knotters adjusted would be welcomed. Thanks.

Hi Kevin, I have 26 years of working on N.H. equipment, so I'll try to give you some tips. First off, timing is not the problem. If you are shearing the small bolt, you have something hitting or binding in the knotter/needle area causing the small knotter shear bolt to break. If the baler was simply out of time, all you would break would be the flywheel bolt. As the other gentleman indicated, the 2 areas that are usually at fault are the needles hitting the bale chamber on the underside or the billhook gear out of place on one of the knotters. Once you solve the knotter bolt problem, you should be good to go unless you have jumped the knotter drive chain trying to fix your problem. Please feel free to email me if you need further assistance. Steve

Try turning the baler over by hand and trip the knotters and watch the needles make sure that they are not hitting some where like under the bale chamber when they reach the top, check for end play in the knotters sometimes the gears could be binding check the knotter brake make sure it is not too tight. If none of this helps let us know and we will try to help.

Kevin: I am too rusty on this to help, my last square baler went in 1976, a NH 69. New Holland equipment of that era had very well written manuals. I farmed most of my life and had IH, Case , JD, Cockshutt and New Holland equipment. New Holland were with out question the very best on operators manuals. None more so than that manual for the 68 and 69 balers. I swear they could guide a New York hair dresser to make a baler work right.
