Dealer's got a super clean 847, manual tie, for $4700. It's been taken real care of. What can anybody tell me about this machine. I know it's an older chain baler, but there seems to be quite a few still being used around here and they all seem to do a decent job.

If I don't buy it I'll probably get a new 638 with the intrest rate being what it is, but I really don't want to spend that much(11,800 financed). Just was curiuous about what some owners/users thought about this baler. Thanks.

Casey

I'd skip the 638, too. Buy a 640/644/648. Much, much better than a 638. The 638 is built for <500 bales per year. Doesn't even have 6 hole hubs & rims. New meaning for light duty.

I would say that price is high. You can get a good
used belt or the NH 848 for around that price.
The NH chain balers with the air bags are a world better than the ones with the springs. I would stay away from the 847.

Go with the NH belt baler, you won't be sorry. I used chain balers for years, got a NH 650 now and wouldn't even consider going back. Look a little west (Leitchfield area), I got an immaculate 650 for $7500. Out in the midwest and west the chain balers are ok. Here in KY we have so much more rainfall that you won't be satisifed with longivity of bales. Example: 650 bale, set at 4x4 looks as good the second year as an 847 out of the baler. 650 bale at 4x4 (2 year old bale) looks better than an 851 (5.5x5.5) bale after the 1st winter. I spent 20 years using chain balers, my dad bought a NH belt in 91 and it made me sick to look at this hay and then see mine. I "saved my pennies" for a few years but glad I did.

The earlier balers weren't very good, but the last
ones with the air bags are good balers. Our 848
makes as good a bale that sheds water as my wife's
Grandfather's 630 roll belt makes.

Point taken, I like the 848's ok, just never seemed to be very many of them and they sell (here) for about what a belt baler does with a lot more expense in the upkeep.

Hi, I bought a supper clean 847 this spring for $2500. It bid up to $2000 at an auction with a reserve of $2500, I ended up paying the reserve price. The book price is $2800 to $3400. I bought this becuase of the condition and the fact it was on the small size. Bill

I've had an 847 for about15 years & it was used when Igot it. It's been very trouble free, low maintenance. I bale about 500 bales yearly. Only broke one chain.Dontmake as pretty a bale as a belt baler , but a lot less maintenence. When I worked in a dealership during hay season I repaired belts and lacing every day.
